Good film... for the first hour
I remember i loved this film as a kid, but only the first hour or so as soon as they make it up into space... the film kind of dies, such a shame!

One point is being missed, which you could have gotten from the movie: those aliens were kids themselves! Why would advanced adult aliens contact children? Shouldn't like the President of the U.S. been taken? Or a group of scientist so that they could be taught by the aliens. Alien children makes sense, especially not such advanced alien children, because it was kids, with limited knowledge about anything, albeit pretty good in science, that were chosen to make contact with. So, it makes perfect sense to make such aliens. Anything else would have been too hard for human children (the characters in the movie), or human children watching the movie, to understand.
shareWe get it. Still didnt work. I'm watching it right now and it is in the last act as i type. I was not on my laptop until these ridiculous alien children appeared. And i also felt that it was a letdown even when i used to watch as a kid in the 80s. Right now im just waiting for it to end. 75% of a Great film. What a shame.
shareI agree Explorers is like 2 separate movies Frankenstein-ed together- one is a thoughtful, above average 80s kids flick and the other half belongs with crap like 'garbage pail kids' . The tone of the film totally changes when we meet those obnoxious aliens and it's a shame because this could have easily been one of those classic 80s movies if the last 3rd of the film wasn't so awful. The three boys were well cast and thier characters were very likeable, the plot was intriguing and it has a great score by Jerry Goldsmith but that cringeworthy stuff on the spaceship kills it, they shouldn't have had any cliche aliens in the movie - something more abstract would have worked better.
shareI'm with the OP. The fun was in building the ship, tech, and testing it. Actually meeting the aliens is the downfall.
