Ending pairings were wrong

We have 5 kids:
A jock
A popular hot girl
A bad boy
A nerd
A quiet girl

Jock ends up with quiet girl. Bad boy ends up with popular hot girl. Nerd gets nobody.

I think it would have been better if jock ended up with popular hot girl. Nerd ended up with quiet girl. Bad boy gets nothing...we all have our issues (like the other 4 also had) but it doesn't entitle you to be a jerk to everyone else.

Thoughts?

In my opinion, that would be rather stereotypical of an ending. The whole thing I saw come out of the movie was in the one day that they were together they broke their average stereotypical lifestyle and saw each other as people. I'm sure after the movie and a few months later none of them would publicly be friends but they always had that one day to be who they are.

reply

That's exactly right--you would expect the pairings you mention, but there would be no movie in that case--you can see that every day in school already.

reply

Again, how was Bender any more of a jerk than Andrew and Claire? Bender didn't tape a nerd's ass cheeks together in gym class. Bender didn't skip school to go shopping.

And the two of them were provoking him as much as he was provoking them.

The taping thing makes you a jerk but skipping school to go shopping...really?!

The jock and the popular girl would have reinforced their stereotypes, which would have been against the whole point of the film. I do think it was a little stupid that the jock and the quiet girl ended up together, especially since it was only when she changed the way she looked that he got interested.

Personally I would have liked to see the nerd end up with somebody but I guess that's okay. Then again, I agree with the other commentator who said it might have been more meaningful if no one paired off at all.

When a cold momma gets hot, boy how she sizzles!

Then isn't that a stereotype too? Popular guy only dating hot chicks?

Exactly why I thought their pairing was stupid. It wasn't until she conformed a little more to his ideal that the jock got interested. If the script had been a bit braver they would have let him like her for who she was and not how she dressed.

TBH I didn't like that the bad boy got the prom queen, either. Not because of the way they looked or stereotypes etc, but because he was pretty misogynistic and I felt getting the girl in the end reinforced that behavior. That's probably just my more modern sensibilities talking, though.

But even in today's modern world, girls still like a bad boy.
The difference here is that they also see beyond each others' stereotype and know the real person a bit better too.

reply

In fact in today's world they are even more obsessed with the bad boy than back in the 80s (or at least that was the case late 90s well into the 00s). Give the nerd hear some more of the athletic skills and looks of the jock and he'd do more than fine in the 80s even with the cheerleaders, but probably still struggle a bit in the late 90s/00s with 'it' girls, or really any girls, since he wouldn't have any of the bad-boy gangsta type vibe that seemed to become so much more key later on.

For all the PC talk and this and that, fact is 80s 'it' girls (and just girls in general to an extent) went, in actual practice in reality, a lot more freely for a lot more types a lot more often.

Where do you get this idea that Andrew was only interested in Allison after the makeover? Earlier scenes showed that he cared about her and she saw that he wasn't the hot *beep* that he liked to portray himself as.

reply

Yes, exactly. He showed interest before the makeover, not after.

reply

The first few times I watched this, I felt the same way. It kind of diminished the whole message of the movie that he didn't like her until she changed, but when you think about it he explains why he likes her better after she changed. He doesn't mention anything besides being able to see her, which does stick to the message of the movie. Once her hair is pulled back, he can finally see her face and that's what makes him attracted to her. He does like her for who she is. The same way the group connects after learning each others secrets. They see each other for who they really are.

Also, he did show concern for her before that[when he thought she wanted to run away], so it's not that bizarre they ended up together.

I'm a Timelord.
Right, not pompous at all then.

reply

he did not simply get interested in her.

he never even made any comment about how she was hotter he simply said I can see your face now. and she said is that good and he replied yes this was not what made him interested in her. they spent 8 hours locked in a room together and over that 8 hours she came out of her shell and they all began to like each other

Unfortunately, I personally started getting girlfriends when I started being an asshole. I used to be the sensitive good guy who was constantly rejected by girls back in high school until I got sick and tired and started to be kind of a jerk.

Don't ask me what the fuck is wrong with girls, but they tend to like the "confident " bad-boy and then they complain that all men are jerks. I got like I am today because I became really tired of all the women's bullshit.

True story: I had a crush on a girl and I tried everything to show her that I am a caring guy who will be a perfect match for her. She simply rejected me and did it in a mean way. A few years later, I met her in a party and she came talking to me, and I literally told her to fuck off. Result: two days later I slept with her. Then she wanted to date more and I told her that she can eat a pile of shit. She then started to complain to everyone that I am a fucking asshole.

Go figure, but women can be really stupid.

I think him and Allison ending up together would have worked really well if it was for different reasons. Then again I think the entire ending is supposed to be symbolic for all of them growing more comfortable with who they are so it was supposed to be more symbolic.

I think they should have had at least one more girl in there so that the nerd could have had someone also

Criminal and princess were already attracted to each other... Criminal hates princess' world, not her. They are polar opposites in the movie. He wants to be part of her perfect world and she's bored of her perfect life.

Jock and quiet girl. Jock is perceptive but "he can't think for himself" which is the complete opposite of the quiet girl who is completely an individual who lives inside her head. She's used to being ignored but the jock forces her to open up. She answers what the jock's problem is and he agrees. They've connected on a deeper level. Jock can't be with the princess cos he's used to girls like her. It wouldn't be a transformative choice.

Carl should have ended up with someone.

High school popularity has almost nothing to do with looks and almost everything to do with how you dress and present yourself. Once you're popular, the hot label follows, even if you a ain't.

Compared to some of the popular girls that were at my school, MR looks pretty good here.

I personally would have loved for bender and allison to end up together. Their characters would mesh better together and they would actually have a shot. Both with home lives that are abusive in some form, the stoner and the artist. I think the other combos would just end in disaster. But if 2 pairs is necessary, I think bender and allison, and maybe Claire and Brian, leaving the hot jock by himself.
