How different would "Back to the Future" have turned out had Ronald Reagan never become President of the United States?

Let's say Jimmy Carter actually won a second term and then his vice president Walter Mondale succeeded him in the presidency in 1984-85, would neo-1950s nostalgia catch on in the same way that you would argue did in the Reagan-Bush '80s?

Somebody in this forum kind of joked that Michael J. Fox in a round about way, owes his career to Ronald Reagan:

This is because Reagan doesn't become president, then we probably don't get Family Ties, or if we do get it, it would've likely had been radically different. And we probably don't get '80s excess films like The Secret of My Success.
