Back to the Future trilogy screenwriter Bob Gale weighs in on whether another entry in the franchise's canon will ever get the green light.
Back to the Future co-creator Bob Gale recently indicated that fans shouldn't get their hopes up for a fourth installment of the classic sci-fi/comedy franchise.
Gale, who co-wrote Back to the Future with director Robert Zemeckis and has sole screenwriting credit for its two sequels, shot down the possibility of Back to the Future 4 in an interview with Variety. "People say, 'Why don’t you guys do Back to the Future Part 4?'" he said. "When they say that, they're saying, 'I want something that makes me feel as good as the original did.' That’s what [the Back to the Future stage show] is. That's the feeling you're going to get here when you see this show. There’s no need to go back to that well. You've seen too many people go back too many times. As I've said many times, the characters in Back to the Future are my family, my children. You don't sell your kids into prostitution."
Gale's protectiveness for the Back to the Future franchise stands in stark contrast to star Michael J. Fox's more modest appraisal of the property's artistic merits. Fox, who portrayed protagonist Marty McFly, suggested that Back to the Future is "over-appreciated" by its fanbase in a previous interview. At the same time, the Hollywood icon also expressed fondness for the trilogy's devotees, acknowledging how gratifying his experiences at fan conventions are. "I thought I was doing this for [the fans]. This is totally for me," he said. "This is a pig out for me. How much these people have given to me."
