Get a lighter to light ten times in a row.
What episode was this from? There was a bet over if it could be done I seem to remember.

Sounds like Cat's Eye
shareAs I recall, this was a story that was done on Alfred Hitchcock presents.
shareI watched this a couple days ago, On Tales Of The Unexpected
share********SPOILER********
I've also seen this (loosely based) in the 1990 episode of Tales From the Crypt, called "Cutting Cards". It starred Lance Henriksen and Kevin Tighe as two rival high-rolling gamblers (addicts).

The difference here is that they take turns with the fingers and then move on to limbs and so forth. It ends where they are both playing cards in a mental institution, but they are now reduced to armless, legless torsos playing Russian roulette.

I believe it originally was a short story by Roald Dahl
shareYup right u are.... originally from a roald Dahl short story :-)
I think the story is called man from the south.
Yes, it's call Man From the South based on a Roald Dahl short story. It was an Alfred Hitchcock Presents but you may have seen the remade episode from the 1980's. It's interesting in that it stars Melanie Griffith with her mother Tippi Hedren from Birds and Marnie making a cameo appearance. The man with the lighter is Steven Bauer, the man with the cleaver is actor and director John Huston and his wife with hardly any hand left is Kim Novak from Vertigo. Can't remember who the man counting out the successful lights is, but he looked familiar.
Tell me where does it say 'When you're lost you stay that way'?
Is Tyler McVey the one you're thinking of? It's been a while since I've seen it, but I'm pretty sure he was in the 'lighting' scene.

wait for iiiiit
Thanks, but is seems not. After your reply I decided to look it up. The page is here:

Turns out the man counting out the successful lights was also in Escape from Alcatraz, which is where I must have seen him.
Tell me where does it say 'When you're lost you stay that way'?
*Spoiler Alert*
Man From the South is one of my favorite Alfred Hitchcock episodes. I love how deliciously evil Peter Lorre is in that one, especially the eyes! I still heave a sigh of relief when the wife comes in and the lighter doesn't light. She played the game with him, too, because she is missing a few fingers.
Peter should have been in some more of them, like Road Hog (Boris Karloff would have been great as the father of the three boys) and Turn backward.
Enjoy :) >>> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0f_RqPeMYBk
shareI remember seeing the 80s version back around ‘85 when it premiered. I think it was one of four stories they grouped together for the premiere of the show. I had never seen the Steve McQueen version before. I had videotaped it. I just remember I couldn’t get myself to sit all the way through it the first time because watching John Houston with that meat cleaver ready to chop of the guy’s fingers really creeped me out. I eventually watched it all the way through. If I’m not mistaken it ends a little differently than the original Steve McQueen version.
