Madeline's dresses

All of the women's dresses were fantastic but which dress that they had Lesley-Ann-Down wear in the movie was your favourite?
Mine would probably be the blue dress she had on when Justin brought her the present.(The unicorn music box).

reply

I really loved the dress she was wearing in the scene when she first meets Orry after her carriage broke down; it's striped with different shades of blue. But I can't imagine how any woman walked around in those dresses! And corsets! Yikes!

reply

I like the dress she wears in episode 6 of Book I when Orry tells her he's mortgaged Mont Royal. The hat caps it off. :)

Overall, though, Brett wears my favorite dresses.

"Fact is, I defended you. They said you weren't fit to sleep with pigs. But I said you were!"

reply

I loved the purple riding dress she wore in Book I. When she goes for a ride with Justin.
And then I loved her yellow wedding dress when she marries Orry...

reply

I am a Civil War re-enactor. Several times a year, I wear those dresses--yes, and a corset too!--for 4 and 5 days in a row. We wear all 7 to 9 layers that women wore in that time. It is actually easy, once you get used to it, and I love wearing all that stuff. In fact, I probably have more CW clothes than I do modern-day stuff!

reply

On Disc 3 of the DVD set, there is a "Remembering North and South" piece. Lesley-Anne Down, among other actors, had some comments. She said that wearing the corsets was the worst thing imaginable. The women got to remove them at lunch, and Down said that the corsets would be hung up to dry, just dripping with sweat. She also said that most of the women stopped having their periods because the corsets "just pushed everything together."

I also really liked madeline's dress when she gets the gift from justin, and the all black one she wears walking along the long veranda at resolute when Justin is talking to his nephew Forbes before the war begins. i also LOVE the "Charles Worth original" that George bought Constance (the one she thinks might be too "irish") and above all i think that Ashton has the most elaborate and beautiful dresses (the spoiled brat that she is lol)

reply

*LOL* I agree with YOU, pietersjm! Ashton has the best dresses. I LOVE the pink-and-white striped one with the black velvet sash and ribbons that she wears when she has that party and invites the Vice President and his wife. It's my all time favorite. I also love the one she wears when she goes to visit Bent for the first time - that rust-colored one with the cape that Bent takes off - and attacks her neck ...

Brett also has some beauties - the white dress with the purple shawl that she wears when Billy proposes, and the rust-and-green one she wears when Orry gets married...

reply

My favorite Madeline dress was the one she was wearing during the bbq at Mont Royal right before George and Orry go off to Mexico. The one where she speaks out against Justin and he pulls her out of the party. I can't remember the colors off hand (mauve and gray come to mind). DARN now I gotta go watch it again...hubby isn't going to be happy!!! lol

reply

the all black one on the veranda!!, and yes the dress constance got from george, for virgillia i like the striped one at the party of sam greene when she asks sam to go into the study, ashton I think my favorite was when the south did succeed and orry told her to congratulate her sister on the coming wedding with billy, after that she goes of raging "southeren rights" and meets up with forbes, also later the red dress she had on the party with jefferson davis where she met elkenah bent...although the color was kind of trashy typical ashton to wear such a brite color LOL

reply

One of my favourites is the soft greyish ensemble Madeline wears at her fathers deathbed. It is very period.
(She wears it again when writing the farewell-letter to Orry during the war...)
Maum Sally had some nice costumes too, and combined wtih her French-New Orleans accent - it gave that little something to the story.

reply

I've started watching the series again to refresh myself.... I thought most of Madeline's dresses were "too much"... too much ruffle and the hats too big with too much stuff on them. I'm still trying to find one of my favorites for her. A couple fo my overall favorite dresses were (and I'm only on Part 1 /Tape 3) : Constance's plaid dress when she first met George in Texas and Virgilia's plaid blue and white dress with the blue bows she wore to George and Connie's wedding. I think I'm partial to plaids.

reply

My favorite Madeline dress is the one she wears when she and Orry firts meet. My favorite Brett dress is the red plad one she has on when she walks in on a topless Ashton. But my favorite dress is the dress that Ashton wears the night South Carolina split from the union. That black dress with those bright pinks and purples was really something.

reply

My favourite dresses:

1. Virgilia's green satin dress at the party at Mount Royal when she first meets Grady
2. Constance's red dress at the same party
3. Madeline's blue dress at the same party
4. Madeline's peach dress when Justin gives her a gift.
5. Madeline's blue dress when she helps Priam escape.
6. Ashton's dress when she first meets Bent.
7. All of Ashton's other dresses!

reply

I like the blue ones and the pink ones. The sad thing is, nearly every time she wears a beautiful dress it ends up ripped, in the first book anyways. But i think all of the costumes were very nice. I also love the yellow dress she is wearing just before she leaves mont royal, she looks great in it.

~Yes, fill in a comment card... and then shove it up your ass ~

reply

Ok, I was watching the movie last night, and I've discovered a new favorite dress, I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner. My favorite dress in the whole movie is the one that Brett is wearing at the very beginning of Book II. I also LOVE the hat that she wears with it. My new favorite Madeline dress is the one she's wearing when Orry kills Justin. I really like that one.

reply

Maud Hazard and Clarissa Main wear some lovely dresses too--not flashy, of course, like the principal characters do, but very dignified and period-correct.

reply

HOw sad r u talkin about dresses from like a really ancient show . ewww willow willow u actually like the yellow dress . wot a geek that colors gross

If u love me ur a bitch mwah!!

reply

Well what are you doing on this board then? If we're sad then so are you for coming on here. Have you even watched the show? If not, what the hell are you doing here and if so, why the hell are you picking on others who have seen it and maybe enjoyed watching it? The board was asking what dresses people liked, so obviously people are going to answer it. I happen to think Madeline looked pretty in that dress, it was a nice shade of yellow. And how can you be a geek for liking a COLOUR? Get a life girl.

~Fact is, i defended you; They said you weren't fit to sleep with pigs, i said you were!~

There is a sky blue dress that Madeline wears in Book I that is just spectacular. If I remember correctly, it is at the party at Mont Royal where she speaks out against Justin on the topic of secession.

The "Charles Worth original" that Constance wears is also great. However, when Virgilia wears it, it just doesn't look the same.

I must agree that Ashton had the best dresses. Hers were always so much more elaborate than everyone else's. However, she has one dress that stands out. A vibrant red one that she wore to some kind of political party. Does anyone remember this one?

reply

the dress she wears when she speaks against justin is a dusky pink colour. She wears a sky blue one when justin drags her up the stairs, though.

~Fact is, i defended you; They said you weren't fit to sleep with pigs, i said you were!~

reply

why do ya actaually notice colors on dresses .woopty doo

If u love me ur a bitch mwah!!

reply

Contrary to what you may think, this "really ancient show" was a marvelous period costume piece. There are people in this world--as evidenced by this thread--to whom the colors and details of a dress are important. If you find it so boring, or whatever, then why are you on this thread? Oh, and by the way--you may want to learn to spell.

reply

Why do you care what i notice? If youre watching something and it interests you, you would obviously be observant about certain things. You're telling me you're so blind to detail that you notice jack when wathching something?? For godsake grow up!

~Fact is, i defended you; They said you weren't fit to sleep with pigs, i said you were!~

reply

[deleted]

Everything to do with civilisation interests me? What the hell are you on about? If you are grown up then here's an idea; ACT LIKE IT. From reading the patheticness of your boards, how the hell was i supposed to know how 'grown up' you are? Add that to the lameness of your name and you have what appears to be a sad, troublemaking five year old.

~Fact is, i defended you; They said you weren't fit to sleep with pigs, i said you were!~

reply

Do you think we could be so lucky as to have gotten rid of this idiot? The last post was deleted by an administrator--must have been a doosey!

reply

We're not so lucky, hollycecilia, the idiot is practically stalking me, she has just changed her name and continuing to be a huge troll. Is there anything we can do to get rid of her permanently.

~Fact is, i defended you; They said you weren't fit to sleep with pigs, i said you were!~

reply

I loved all the period costumes the ladies wore, we just bought the complete DVD set of all 3 books and have just finished watching Books 1 and 2 and plan on watching Book 3.

As for that person that derides what others say, you've got to learn to ignore them, don't answer anything they say, eventually they tire of their childishness and grow up. Answering them only feeds into the response they are hoping to garner.

As for the red dress that Ashton wore, I believe it was when her and James attended the reception given by Jefferson Davis and she berates her husband for getting in an argument with Davis. Isn't that where Bent shows up and Ashton notices him, but he ignores her and goes to talk to James about investing in ships to transport luxury items?

reply

I agree with Leelyn1--I say we just ignore her and maybe she'll get the hint and go away. What has she changed her name to, so the rest of us will know not to give her the satisfaction of a response?

She has also shown up on the message board on North & South Book II. "Huge troll" is actually rather generous...I can think of several other adjectives, none of them complimentary.

Are you a Civil War buff, a reenactor, or just a fan of the miniseries? Either way, it's a pleasure to exchange thoughts, etc. on the movie. I make CW-era dresses, ball gowns, etc. What fun!

reply

Personally, i think that are a a few people on this board that need to grow the $%&@ up! this board is primarily for those that are fans of North and South. Those that do not have interests in the show should not be on here. Personally, i think that people need to respect the opinions of others. Esp. up there somewhere were a commemt was made about a yellow dress.....how are u going to say ewh to someone liking that color that is just plain stupidity and immaturety. Colors are colors....get a life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Personally, i think that Lesley Anne Down is beautiful. She was my favorite inthe series. She looks beautiful in all of the dresses that she wears so i dont have a favorite i mean she could wear the ugliest dress and it would look beautiful on her!!!!!!!!!!!!

GROW UP PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

reply

She's changed her name to WILLOWISWIERD-ASHELY0. I think it's directed at me but i'm beyond caring anymore.
I agree, huge troll is generous. And it is really immature to pick on a colour too. The girl who wrote that said she was 20 years old, which i can't believe.

Personally, i'm just a fan of the mini-series after i watched it with my mother. I was a big fan of the costumes though, they are very interesting. I agree that all of Lesley-Anne Down's dresses were beautiful. I didn't think much of Ashton's though, it thought they were a little too extravagant. Brett's were very pretty too, as were Constances.
P.S. I really loved Madeline's yellow dress; it really suited her. (Yellow is not a horrible colour, it's very pretty.)

~Fact is, i defended you; They said you weren't fit to sleep with pigs, i said you were!~

reply

I think you are correct in believing it is directed at you, but glad you have decided to just ignore her--as we all should. She is pathetic, a hateful, ill-mannered boor. Enough said about little Miss Ashleyo.

Yes, yellow is a beautiful color. The first ball gown I made is a butter yellow with a white lace overskirt. I think Ashton's dresses were a little too extravagant because her character was so vain and selfish, not to mention downright vicious. The only pick I have with the costuming is that Madeline, Ashton, Brett and Constance often are wearing afternoon dresses any old time of the day. And the necklines are all way to low--even most ballgowns didn't have necklines quite as low as that. But that's Hollywood for you, and the dresses are lovely, low necklines not withstanding!

reply

I think the lowest neckline has to be the dark pinky dress madeline wears whenr Orry leaves to go to war or someything at the end of book 1. I think its her most extravagant one but i didn't like that one too much.

~Fact is, i defended you; They said you weren't fit to sleep with pigs, i said you were!~

reply

My vote for lowest neckline is the red plaid-y one Ashton is wearing when she tempts Billy with the berries. Or it could be the green one she wears when she slaps his face and tells him he and Brett are babies. Hmmm....I'll have to watch the end of book 1 to see the Madeline's dress again--I can't seem to recall it off the top of my head.

reply

I seem to recall another red dress that Ashton is wearing in Book 3 when she is in Chicago and her "husband" Mr. Fenway unveils the first piano their company has produced. The neckline in that gown seems rather low. LOL Guess if you've got it, Hollywood wanted to flaunt it?

reply

Yeah, Hollywood is famous for flaunting it! LOL

reply

I thik it was near the end of book one, where Madeline wore that dress. It was dark pink and white i think. It s when she says something like 'i'm not ready to say goodbye.' Something like that, i'm not 100% sure though.

~Fact is, i defended you; They said you weren't fit to sleep with pigs, i said you were!~

reply

Was it in Book 1 wear Orry is going up to Leheigh Station to give George the money, just before the war breaks out, or was it in the beginning of Book 2 when he is going off to war? I'll have to settle in with some popcorn & watch it again--it's supposed to snow all weekend here, so it'll be a good excuse to stay indoors & watch TV!

reply

Book 1 i think. On the last disk.

~I'm being stalked by pyscho killers and i hide in the shower?!~

reply

Willowwillow--I just have to say that I love your quote!!!! That's also one of my favorite parts in the movie! The look on Charles' face right after he says it & Salem Jones starts coming at him....that little surprised sort of smile! I just love it!!!!

I also must say that my favorite dress is Ashton's red one that she wears. I believe it is the first time she meets Bent. At the party where she is trying to get James to speak to President Davis.

I think that movies like this, with such elaborate costumes, deserve to be recognized. All the dresses were beautiful & I think every woman fantasizes about what it would be like to wear such beautiful clothes. Every thing comes together so you get totally engrossed in the movie. Scenery, clothes, hair-dos, props, locations...all that stuff is important. So for
Willowisweirdashleyo to say that noticing this stuff is lame is pretty silly. Maybe Willowisweirdashleyo should think about a movie that is more relatable to her. Like Titanic. I doubt she didn't think that Kate Winslet's dresses were beautiful in that movie! (I use Titanic as an example cuz I think everyone has seen that!)

reply

I really liked the navy and white dress Virgilia wore when she was lecturing Clarissa Main on slavery. Also the white one she wore at breakfast when Ashton and James were accusing her of helping Grady leave.

reply

Mine would be the very first dress Madeline was in the pale blue one with the large hat.

reply

The dress she wore in the first scene. And I like also that dress she wore when she got married to Orry. :)
