The Pilot

isn't that great. Cybill Sheppard is OK but I'm wondering why it made Bruce Willis a star. I remember liking the show - long ago, and I don't think it's aged particularly poorly but I can't see why it was so watchable. Maybe it was always just Cybill?

I think they had great chemistry. Cybill Shepherd’s comedic timing was incredibly natural. And just when you get a little tired of Bruce Willis quips he was capable of pulling off the thoughtful gentleman to her. The culminating scene at the clock tower was ridiculous for sure. There was zero reason to hide the diamonds there and absolutely no way the Maddie Hayes character would climb out on the clock hands like that. The stunt woman was painfully obvious. But, I think Cybill Shepherd was a fantastic “straight man” and Bruce played the clever quick witted hustler very well. Neither of them stole scenes because they were so fantastic together

I guess I just didn't get that from the pilot - maybe it was a chemistry that developed as the series went on? I remember liking it originally but don't think I'll bother watching any more programs - too many other new series to catch up on.

Yes, it was this. A lot of it came down to the "will they/won't they" sex thing. Once they got down to it, the ratings started to decline. The showrunners didn't really know where to go with it. The actual investigation stuff started to take a back seat to melodrama with Maddie's running off, getting involved with Mark Harmon, etc.

There were a lot of tabloid stories of the tension on set too. Willis' star was eclipsing Sheppard's. It started to show up in the on screen stuff. The showrunners tried to focus on some of the secondary characters to reduce the screen time of the two principals. It only had the effect of accelerating the declining ratings.
