High Anxiety has to be the most annoying episode. They find Rose taking pills that she got when she hurt her back 30 years ago. And automatically say Rose you're addicted. How in the hell is she addicted to pills that's she's been taking over 30 years? How freaking many did that doctor give her!? I love that they do topics like this but make it more believable.
When I first saw the title of this thread, the first thing I thought about was the episode where Rose is addicted to pills. The whole way the premise is presented is ridiculous.
- Rose lashes out angrily one day for the FIRST TIME EVER, so the girls think something must be wrong with her. Then she reveals that she's been on prescription pain killers for 30 YEARS. LOL. So how does that explain her lashing out angrily for a brief moment on that ONE DAY.
-Prescriptions expire. How could Rose get the same prescription pills for 30 years, even after moving across the country to Florida???
-Rose just randomly spends a month in a rehab facility at the end of the episode, and then everything is fine. LOL. No mention of her missing work/income, what came up in therapy, legal repercussions for her "Dr. Feelgood," or anything.
The whole drug addiction story-line in this episode has so many problems, it feels absurd. But kudos for them for tackling the issue of prescription pill addiction.
The hideous boxing episode with Kid Pepe. Sophia not only "buys" him, but the panel interviewing him as a VIOLINIST are somehow empowered to judge and accept him as an actor (a completely different position)? Absolute nonsense, and the episode isn't even funny.
I agree that the way this episode is depicted is ludicrous not to mention inaccurate & judgmental.
Besides the good points you made about how exactly did Rose get refills and/or new prescriptions for this stuff, even in the '80s... But the Girls acted like Rose was some kind of criminal for not being able to just go off this medication cold-turkey. She was addicted, and hard-core addicted to boot! You are not even supposed to go cold-turkey off opiates, you're weaned off. This is standard practice even today.
But the reason why Rose snapped hard at the Girls was because she was going through withdrawal. Sophia had knocked the pills into the sink by mistake, and the pharmacy was closed so she could not refill it right away.
I love how Rose just goes over to the phone & dials, as if she's got a rehab center on the speed dial! And like you mentioned, Rose goes away for 1 month and is not only completely 'cured'....but comes home as giddy as if she'd spent a month in Disney World.
I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus. Didn't he discover America? Penfold, shush.

Thanks, I'd forgotten that part. Makes a bit more sense now.

That's a good point. Although, some years ago I used to know this lady that worked at Texas Instruments and she would frequently miss time from work for bipolar and substance abuse, going into rehab and psych wards. She got paid leave, so that's how she was able to keep her apartment and get the bills paid.

IMO, the dumbest episode is "You Gotta Have Hope". In no other one, before or since, has Rose been so stupid! And having Bob Hope appear out of nowhere at the end was as cheap a gimmick as any.

Her multiple personality blind date in Dateline: Miami, and the fact that she was dumb enough to date him again after the first time, begs to differ.

dumbest episode for me is when rose has her heart surgery and she comes home with no scars, she's walking as if nothing ever happened and not wearing a heart hugger. I know this because when my dad had bypass surgery he had to wear a hert hunger to keep his chest together until he healed and he had to have people help him when he wanted to sit down, stand up or lie down
The premise of "High Anxiety" is certainly up there, but the dumbest for me is "Brother Can you Spare a Jacket?". Hate it. Nothing funny about it. Why Blanche put the ticket in the jacket and left it lying around is beyond me. Then of course the painfully unfunny bit at the shelter, coupled with that cheesy rendition of that song as the girl's search for the ticket, only to have them give it away at the end. The worst part, though, was the faux Michael Jackson hand.
Surprised nobody has mentioned the Empty Nest episode about the doctor and his lonely wife. The girls themselves were barely in it. If memory serves, it was to be a "pilot" for a spinoff with those characters that never came to fruition. Still, it was the worst IMO. And, I can never watch the final episode. Why would they end the show on such a sad note of the girls crying all over each other after Dorothy leaves.
Yes, The Empty Nest is the most useless episode, since it's like totally another tv-series. Also the episodes which repated the old ones I always skip. Other than that, no real dumbness here, every episode has always something to laugh about 😊
Granted, the pilot with Paul Dooley & Rita Moreno was bad. But, to be fair, they tweaked that show and it became a successful series with Richard Mulligan and Kristy McNichol. David Leisure was in both the failed pilot and then in the series as the obnoxious next-door neighbor.
