A Dead Franchise?: The Story of The NeverEnding Story

The NeverEnding Story (German: Die Unendliche Geschichte) is a 1984 fantasy film co-written and directed by Wolfgang Petersen, and based on the 1979 novel The Neverending Story by Michael Ende.

Michael Ende hated the movie The NeverEnding Story. He hated it so much he sued to get them to stop making it but we all know how that turned out.

Despite the popularity and the reignited interest, partly as a result of Stranger Things, The NeverEnding Story remains dead.

Why? How? And will we ever see a return to Fantasia? Do we need to?

Can only guess that another film adaptation would become even more expensive today than it was back then in 1984 (inflation-adjusted).

And understandable why the author Michael Ende disliked the movie.
That may be a general problem with book adaptations, but I also missed the magic of the book.
Immersing yourself in the fantasy world, in the infinite freedom of conscious dreams.
While it's a good movie it was impossible, leastwise for me, to feel the same way watching the movie as reading the book.
