Has any body recently viewed this with friends who thought it was bad?

I have always loved this movie. When I saw it for the first time as a kid a few years younger than the Bastian actor I was so immersed in it that I felt like I was a part of the movie. I still love it. Bought the blu Rays couple years ago and I showed the movie at my house recently to some friends who were born mid 80's so a little younger not having seen it when it first came out. They couldn't stop laughing. They thought the Luck Dragon who, was always my favorite, was creepy and even pervy? They said the children were over emotional/ melo dramatic in their character portrayals. They took pot shots and wise cracks throughout the whole viewing which made me kind of sad. Has any body had this reaction from friends or even found the movie weird or lame themselves rewatching as an adult?

I think if they saw it alone it might have a different impact on them. Especially if you are hyping it up then it comes off as a little hokey, people can tend to try to not seem like a softie when they are in big groups.

Not with this film, but with some anime to a "friend" who supposedly liked anime. What was it ... the film I showed, I think, was "Robot Carnival". And this guy was watching some of the worst Japanese imports you could think of, and yet went on to trash a very artistic like "Robot Carnival", which is an anthology of different animators.

But, to get back on topic, if I had friends like the ones you describe, I think I would remind them that it is a children's film. And maybe stop the film, shrug, say "Okay", and put in a different film.

I can't imagine a group of mature dudes trashing this film. I'm guessing you and your friends are female.
