OK, why did the Terminator shoot the gun shop owner?

Arnie already had the guns and ammo and it wasn't like the owner could stop him from walking out, not even with a phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range.

So, what gives? Why did Arnie shoot the gun shop owner?

Shall we play a game?

He was dissatisfied with the gun store's selection not being up to minimum basic standards. I mean, c'mon, what self-respecting gun store doesn't stock a phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range??

Hey just what you see pal.

To steal the guns.

So he could say "Wrong" after baiting the guy into asking him that special question. 😁

Why wouldn't he shoot the gun shop owner?

From the Terminators perspective there is no utility in keeping the guy alive.

It's more a case of why he didn't kill the guy earlier. And that is because distracting him was beneficial.

To kill him.

Oh, and water is wet.

It would have made more sense for the Terminator to, as you said, reach over and break the clerk's neck or crush his head like a grape. Gun shops don't keep ammunition on the counter within easy reach of their customers.

But it's a cool scene, and reaffirms the lethality and lack of concern the machine has about collateral damage.

I guess he didn't have to shoot him. But the fact is, the scene wouldn't have made much of an impact if the Terminator just shoved the owner out of his way or something.

I remember when I first watched it thinking oh no he's gonna have to wait a few weeks in order to get the guns, what's he gonna do?
then he shoots him
Ah ok problem solved
