Easily Carpenter’s worst film by a county mile

Not a redeemable moment in this turkey of a movie if you ask me. Jeff Bridges has never been more wooden and the plot is non-existent. Thank God Mr Carpenter stayed away from the romance genre after this because it would have ruined his career. Long story short....avoid this at all costs.

this is definitely not even in his bottom half. great film with excellent direction and performances.

Jeff Bridges is supposed to be wooden in this. He plays an alien that does not experience human or any other emotions whatsoever and does not understand them. Sounds you didn't even watch the movie.

This movie is awesome and worth watching.

reply

Um, Jeff Bridges is so "wooden" here BECAUSE HE'S PLAYING A FUCKING ALIEN!!!

And this film is GREAT! One of my personal favourites of Carpenter's. And that theme tune!

Well, the poster has their opinions, held by pretty much by nearly nobody. I guarantee Mr. Carpenter et al. have no intention of taking this film off their resumes any time soon.

reply

Not a chance.

Carpenter has made much worse films than this.

lol the op has never seen ghosts of mars apparently

Definitely one of his BEST films.

It's certainly not perfect, but it shows how someone could step outside of the genre they've been pigeon-holed into, do something completely different and do it well enough to be remembered by a lot of people.

First, this is early Jeff Bridges, when everyone was saying his brother, Beau, was the "real" actor in that generation. So, yeah, he stank compared to what he can do now. But while I have no interest in ever seeing it again, I don't regret seeing it. And it's a lot better than one would think it might be.

reply

Eh? It's one of his best films. It was made in a direct response to critics saying that his films had no heart or emotion. This is a great love story with two of the finest actors of that era - Jeff Bridges & Karen Allen.

It's a much better film than Dark Star, In The Mouth of Madness, Prince of Darkness, The Ward and Vampires.
