Honestly I don't see the point of a remake today when even the president of the USA is black. Don't get me wrong. Racism still exists, it's out there, you can see it, hear it and feel it. But I think that is time to update these stories. Something closer to American History X or Do the Right Thing.
A Soldier's Story, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, In the Heat of the Night, etc. were product of their times. This generation needs to think, write and shoot a picture about their current problems and reality. I.e. Today racism is still there but it's way more subtle than in the 40's or 50's. Besides latinos currently are equally if not more hated than blacks by white supremacists and neo-nazis. Things have changed, that's why IMO a remake is not the best of the ideas. Bring on original stories about today's problems, instead.
