Do you think it´s supposed in the Police Academy-movies that Hightower is to be gay?
* He is basically he only guy in all of the movies that never shows any kind of interests to a woman.
* In movie number 2 at the gaybar Blue Oyster, he fixes his tie when all the gaymen looking and smiling at him.
* In the beginning of movie numebr 3, he dresses in drag (I mean, it´s not the best undercover-disguise for a black man standning 6' 7" with a big mustasch)
It was Procter who knew the address by heart, not Hightower. He also worked at a flower shop before the police force, but none of these criteria necessarily make him gay.
He was into Hooks, it's been a while till I watched PA movies, but as I remember he rolled over a police car when someone yelled at her, not sure did that happen in this movie though.
He flipped over the police car because Copeland called hicks a racial slur. He was defending her honor but also his own by putting a racist in his place.
Because otherwise these forums would be dull. ;) I personally really "love" those confidently stating someone is 100% gay even though there's no evidence for it in a movie itself.
Don't mean to sound too critical because I think their heart was in the right place. But Hightower's gender-bending was more about race than sexual orientation. There's a stereotype of black men as dangerous thugs, especially rapists. "Femme" behavior subverts that stereotype & makes him more of a gentle giant:
I also read that scene with him fidgeting with the tie differently. He gulped & was avoiding eye contact. That looked like an expression of discomfort, not satisfaction.
Considering these, and the fact that he's a florist, I'd say it's intentional but probably nothing more than a subtle implication on the writer's part just to see if anyone notices. Writers do that kinda thing all the time, it's part of the medium. I doubt the filmmakers or actors even noticed.
Remember this is a 1984 film with very blatant gay stereotypes so if the character was gay, It'd be crystal clear now regardless of how sly they attempted to be (just look at 'Nightmare on Elm St. 2'. That was "subtle" in 1985!)
By the same token though, florist says something by this film's standards. So...I don't think the character is gay but I think he is written with the hope that someone will ask the question.
He's a florist because it was the furthest job away from your preconception of seeing a 7 foot mass of a dude. That was the joke. There was no subtext or subtleties.
The writers didnt go for deep thinking within the jokes. They just wrote a joke for every scene to try and make the movie entertaining. No more than surface level.
