Such a different tone from the sequels

The sequels were campy, had horror comedy elements and seemed to be geared toward a younger audience (especially the later films). I watched all the films recently for the first time and I have to say the original film is a world away. This film is pure horror and quite mature in content. It has no comedy elements and it is frightening as Hell. What a difference a different directer makes.

I would argue that Part 2 has the same tone as the first.

reply

It definitely does.

1, 2, to a lesser extent 3 and New Nightmare are the horror ones.

4, 5 and 6 are the comedy ones.

Part 2 was serious, true, but made the least sense story wise. The original has some small funny moments but not a comedy whatsoever. It seems to become more silly the longer the series went.

reply

Absolutely. The first is a straight horror. A few funny lines, but no attempt at anything more than that.

NOES 2 still retained some of the tone from the original .. NOES 3 is when it started to slip with Freddy started to give funny one-liners. By part 4 is when this series turned into something that I did not remotely enjoy

The original was truly scary. Relatable characters and great creepy atmosphere. The score alone is disturbing.

The sequels were okay in my opinion but the comedy elements took me out of it like you stated.

I always felt that after the original film, Freedy basically became horror films' stand up comedian
