Why Harriet Shoots Roy Hobbs In The Natural

The 1984 film The Natural sees Robert Redford's Roy Hobbs shot by Harriet Bird, a mysterious woman who targets him. We break down Harriet's reasoning.

The text from that link says she shot him because she thought he was the best...

That had to be explained????

reply

Yea, just surface-level reasoning. And yet, in substance, accurate.

She was more a sort of a Scylla character, luring ambitious, daring, adventurous men to their doom. Just like the bookie manipulator was a cyclops. Roy (King) was Odysseus.

Agree, but "screen rant" thought her reasoning for shooting Roy needed an article to explain it? It was all there - exposition included. She literally was going to smote the Whammer because she was told he was the best and the best there ever would be. She changed to Roy because he struck out the Whammer and said he was going to be the best. That needed explanation???? (yes, that deserved four question marks!).

reply

Yep. It was simply a recap of what had been rather ponderously elaborated in the film. A more intelligent treatment would have had her shoot him without the connect-all-the-dots exposition in the first place.
