Maybe they are making too much money off of Superhero movies to gamble on a reboot.

shareApparently the original writer (Jonathan R. Betuel) has managed to get the rights to a sequel. The last we knew is that some very early stage development work has been carried out but it seems to have stalled or is being kept quiet.
I believe it is worth pursuing as currently:
- audiences are showing much less interest in Marvel / comic super hero movies
- big screen Star Trek is halted indefinitely
- big screen Star Wars is off until 2026 or so
I asked ChatGPT for a treatment of a TV / streaming mini-series sequel of The Last Starfighter and it gave me a fantastic 8-episode summary of a great detailed story arc. So that certainly seems like another viable option to a single big screen movie production.
