Oh man. I LOVED Mary Spinell in this. Her performance as the mother has to be literally some of the worst acting in film history. I was laughing so hard any time she did anything. Her voice, her thick NY accent, and her general I-don't-know-where-I-am demeanor makes her on of the most enjoyable film characters ever.

AND she was nominated for a Science Fiction Academy award??? Seriously! Did the nominators see the same film I watched?? This all makes me smile broadly and brightly!

I thought she was hilarious as the overbearing mom.

Well, you can't really accuse her of being a bad actress, because like Joe, she's the real deal!

I also thought it was a nice touch - Joe probably wanted nobody but his real mum to play the part, and it was probably a personally nice special touch for them to be in a film together.

I saw the name in the credits but didn't realize she was the mother until I read this. Love her!

Same here. I saw the name in the cast and thought it might be a wife or sister at first.
