The way everyone reacts to Gizmo...

First off, let me just say that this movie is a classic. I grew up watching it. It was always one of my favorites. I thoroughly enjoyed it. But last night, now being in my early 20's, I decided to give it another viewing; and one thing I couldn't help but notice is how everyone reacted to Gizmo. Here's this essentially unknown creature from China, and everyone acts like its no big deal. I mean, they just discovered a new creature, and yet they're all so calm and nonchalant about everything. I don't know...I just found that strange.

But still, Gremlins is an all-time classic.

He’s cute and friendly. Most probably assume just because they don’t know what he is that doesn’t mean he’s unknown

reply

It's 1984, and it's a small town in USA.
You can bet good money that they are scientifically ignorant, including the teacher that experiments on Gizmo, and have never visited or studied anything regarding China.
So, had they presented them Godzilla instead of Gizmo, they would have shrugged it off as "it's ok, it's from Japan, you know...".

reply

I lived in a small town in 1984 in the USA. We had encyclopedias and knew what all the major mammals were, including mammals from China. We watched Wild Kingdom too.

reply

ATG6 I didn't mean to insult you or your town specifically, but like you mentioned, you knew about all the MAJOR mammals. Did you know what a lemur is or where it's from? Or a red panda? Or a wombat? Let alone a mogwai...

reply

People in 1984 knew about those animals, of course. Do you think the 80s was the Stone Age? People were informed before the internet, you know. Back then, people read books and magazines and watched TV. It's hilarious what delusions people have about the 80s. BTW, we also had electricity and drove cars.

reply

People in the 80’s didn’t know what animals were because the internet didn’t exist back then 🤣

reply

And people would know Gizmo doesn't look or behave like existing animals. Plus if they saw him they would go to the library.

reply

To the film's credit, Billy did go to the science teacher.

reply

The movie is fine. The Heisenberg dude/dudette is obnoxious.

reply

We've all been there.

well theres many weird and wonderful creatures the world over that most people havent seen.
You dont immediately think: "Wow that must be a brand new magical lepricorn unicorn creature!"

Although when it starts popping those babies out ...

reply

I know, but come on. Here's a creature that has basically never been seen before (or at least not in the US), and everyone is so nonchalant about it. I would be like, "wtf is that?!" But hey, that's just me. lol

Have a look at these things!

Even now in the internet age I am still coming across types of animals and breeds I never knew existed. So back then it is kind of plausible that they would just think he is some rare type of Chinese animal.

China at the time being a very mysterious place for most Westerners.

reply

Lol...just a rare type of Chinese animal. No big deal.

reply

well that is how they were responding to it. at times that stupid shaving kit seemed more interesting to them!

reply

Normal people just don take that much interest in each other people's pets.

Of course I tend to hang around with the kind of animal nutters who get along better with their friends' pets than their friends, and who take a keen interest in any "exotics" they meet. But I cant claim such people are normal.

reply

I agree but there is very realism in this film. yes, an all-time classic.

BTW, you got some really dumb responses in the past two years. Unfortunately, most of them can reproduce.

reply

Haha, well thank you for the response.

reply

I think it's because of two things. One he's just too cute, and two they're just dumb and that's actually quite common in society. They also had him hidden so it was only a few people that knew about him and his background. They probably saw him like a pet, like a hamster or something.

reply

I know but c'mon, he's an unknown species. That's significant. But I agree some people can be just dumb.

reply

And just after that post
China introduced the world to Pangolins .... who destroyed it .
They must have fed one after midnight
But they are still cute!

reply

There are tons of unknown animals in the world. I see them all the time on the internet and dont freak out.
