Was dancing really banned somewhere?

The idea that dancing has been forbidden in this movie may seem sort of silly to many people rating the film. Of course we have that in Iran today but for most people I think it's hard to access what the conservatives are thinking.

Were there in 1984 any places that really banned dancing in the USA? How about today?

Utah was the location of filming for Footloose (1984) To this day (2015) St George, Utah (in the south west corner of Utah) still bans dancing. Funny because their is a state college there. So you can imagine what outsiders think of that. HMMM
