Lead Character Silent
Can anyone think of any other movies where the lead character(s) never speak? Just curious.

shareHolly Hunter won an oscar for "The Piano" in which she didn't speak (couldn't speak).
There are lots of movies with mute sidekick, but for main characters, here are a few more:
Marlee Matlin in "Children of a Lesser God" - also won an Oscar for the performance.
Charlie Chaplin in "The Great Dictator" (Not a silent film - he played two roles: Adenoid Hynkel, an Adolf Hitler parody, and a Jewish barber, who did not speak... until the end of the film)
Dumbo
Philippe in "Run Wild, Run Free" (1969)
Jar-Jar Binks... oh, wait, we just wish he couldn't speak.
You must see "Johnny Belinda" See this film.

dearjym , from your post, I ended up getting The Great Silence. I agree with most people about it being sooooo much violence, but it works for the movie and it's one I would suggest for anyone looking for a spaghetti western that requires some thought.
shareNot a lead character, but a supporting is Jonathan Frid in "The Devil's Daughter." He did this one to finish out his contract with ABC after coming off of "Dark Shadows." Here's this fine actor who could entertain you reading the phone book with his voice and they give him a silent part! What a waste!

shareWhat about Harpo? He's not really the lead, I guess, but he's everyone's favorite :)
