How come this is not in IMDB Bottom 100?

Seriously, i thought this movie was crap and i'll give it a 1/10 (1 point for the fast pace and scattered humour)...

how come everybody loves this movie? Is it because i'm not american and don't understand the jokes and references in this movie?

i'm not saying that my judgement is best; but i mostly agree with other users when it comes to an average rating; but strangely i couldn't understand sh*t of this movie and actually finished it in 2 sittings!

Kinda feels like Back to the Future's little brother (I know...same producer, but still). And the lectroids always make me laugh. Someone gives a command and they just stare blankly. A lot of it is the scattered humor, yes. A lot of it, for me, is the distinct eighties feel.

Now go watch it again and keep your eyes peeled for Christopher Lloyd flipping John Lithgow the bird at the end.

....Priceless.

Except this would be Back to the Future's older brother.

Personally, I think its because you're not American. Lose double points if you're French or Canadian. LOL

reply

Bleh. I'm not american and I love it.

And I think you should get points for being not american.

Bleh @ americans who think you should lose points.

It's not cultural. I'm American and I think the movie is awful. When I saw it wasn't rated among the worst I thought it was supposed to satirize space movies, but no? Spielberg couldn't save this piece of crap.

Hey, I'm French-Canadian and I love this movie!

I've just seen the DVD tonight. Great fun.

reply

I am French and love the movie.

The movie is great in its own way. I wish it would come out on BluRay. I'd buy it.

I, too, am a "ABBA8D"-lover & a non-american (Danish, to be precise). Actually, I would think that Americans would rate it lower - being repelled by the low production value, that it seems that Europeans generally find it easier to bear with. However, facts supports your point of view, not mine. It's really not so hard to look into, you can just click "user ratings" in the menu on the left, and you'll learn that 2972 American voters have given this movie an average rating of 6.1, whereas 999 non-americans have given it an average rating of 5.1. I guess that ust goes to tell you that... ...well, I dunno. It probably doesn't tell me anything at all.

Actually, I think the opposite is true. I'm a Canadian living in Britain and I love it. I think it appeals to the same sense of humour as HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY.

reply

I cannot explain. It's goofy. It's crazy. It befuddles the logical mind ... and in some way it is GENIUS!

Beyond explanation this movie is (imagine Yoda said that...)

I swear I have quoted it more than amy other film for the last 20 years! I never tire of it ...

if you don't get it then you are lost ... so lost ...

reply

I totally agree with you...from the first time I saw it back in the eighties to my most recent viewing, it just cracks me up! It's random & bizarre & one of the funniest moviest in my opinion.

Remember, wherever you go, there you are.

reply

Me too. My fav line "The deuce you say!"...also...of course, "Laugh while you can, monkey boy"

reply

Wow! I say that all the time and I forgot where I got it! I've been saying it since I first saw the movie in the theater...

reply

Agreed; it's a work of practically unfathomable genius.

Buckaroo plays out like an excellently paced comic book. The very things that made it corny, all the low budget stuff, is what made it kind of slick. Not to mention the writing, performances and diverse pop cultures.

I liked it, i think it is a great scifi comedy classic.

I think people that don't enjoy this movie don't have any imagination. They weren't dreamers when they were kids. Anythings possible if you can imagine it and that's what makes this movie great! Brain surgeon, physicicst, comic book hero and rock star all in one how can you miss the charm and magic of a character like that.

This movie isn't on the bottom 100 because it's an amazing film.

Oh, indeed my friend.

I just got the extended edition DVD for Valentines Day (Along with The Ice Pirates, another 80's low-budget masterpiece). Man, I loved this movie the first time my father introduced me to it 12 years ago, and now it's even better because I understand the jokes better.

You see, there are some of us under 30 people who appreciate this movie.

If you don't, then you'll be the first to fall to Lord John Whorfin's schemes without being any the wiser!

The humor is in the absurdity. A quick litmus test for anyone's absurdity quotient is, Is the following funny:

Q:"What'a that watermelon for?"
A:"I'll tell you later."
...and it is never mentioned again.

This movie is full of non-sequiturs, which I tend to find really, really funny anyway.

Not everyone enjoys this kind of humor.

I laughed muchly.

I totally agree. The humour in this film is just fantastic. I really feel sorry for people who don't get this film. I just think it's so sad for them they will go through their life not appreciating the absurdity of everything let alone even knowing everything is absurd.
