Remake or Sequel?
which would be better? I vote sequel. I feel like this long after with a bunch of older guys would be pretty sweet, plus ellen barkin is still stupidly hot so what do you think people?

shareThe "official" word seems to be that the movie was based on true events within the Buckaroo Banzai universe, so it is actually a movie inside a fictional universe. I could imagine it being like a James Bond franchise, where the actors are changed every few movies. In case the 27 year older actors are reluctant to return, as much as I would love them returning. And of course, there should be off-handed mentions of the dozen or so adventures since then.
shareA part two. hands down.

Need I say more?
Can we just have a movie with Ellen Barkin walking around in a very short skirt or tight shorts? That'd do nicely :)
shareSequel. If all the old players can't come back, you can always go with a 'Buckaroo Banzai: The Next Generation' storyline with the originals handing off the proverbial torch to their children/proteges. In which case...it'd be more a half/half thing, half sequel/half reboot.
I nominate Joss Whedon to direct and/or (co)write. He's REALLY good at team comradery-style storytelling(Firefly, Angel, Buffy, Avengers, etc.) AND he's a self-proclaimed (scifi) geek/fanboy who would more than likely be willing to give the production the appropriate fanboy love it deserves. ;D
It'll be like Luke Duke and the other guy.
Really?
Yeah.
NO!
Sequel would be godlike!!! Barkin still has it!!

Although this is a very old thread, this move is still alive in the hearts of many people.
I'm going to be the standout and say "remake" for the simple reason that a reunion of the original cast wouldn't work. It would simply be nostalgia for old people - both the actors and fans alike. Not only do they all look very different, but they're all different people now and I strongly doubt they'd be able to have any similar adventures in their 60s. Even 7 years ago when this question was first posed, would you have believed that all of these people would have stuck together for 25 years and not moved on to other things in life?
What I think would be phenomenal is getting a new cast that could capture a similar tone of irreverence and intelligence. It would be a mistake to try to cram new actors into imitations of the old roles... only Peter Weller is Peter Weller and you'll be hard pressed to find anyone else who can be Jeff Goldblum or Clancy Brown. They'd need to assemble a cast with the same sort of chemistry with each other and let them create the characters themselves.
I'd also greatly prefer to see them doing it as a cable TV series. There's so much invested in putting a movie together and you have only one shot to make it work. A TV series would allow them to grow and find an audience and would also allow them to be more campy and get away with it.
That said, I don't think we'll ever see another Buckaroo Banzai filmed project. The rights are apparently so complicated that it's next to impossible to track them all down with 100% certainty. That and the audience is too small to reliably make a profit. It's too big of a risk for an industry that doesn't like to lose money. We should all be happy that we have this movie to enjoy.
