there is no sound in space
There is no sound in space. 2001 used that fact, magnificent silence. 2010 had sound in space. Major stupid error.

shareIt's unfathomable. One of the most famous and beloved things about 2001 is the level of scientific accuracy, and most notable of all that Kubrick made sure that sound waves did not propagate in space. Someone had to make a conscious decision when making 2010 to chuck all that and add in sound anyway. I guess they thought that the audience would get up and storm out if the Discovery's engines didn't make a blasting sound when starting up. Fools.
shareIt's simply not the same kind of film.
shareIt's not a mistake. Ridley Scott said, in an interview, that sound is augmented for dramatic effect. It heighens the viewer's experience of accelation, as an example. I imagine other directors do the same.
shareNo sound but apparently all of the sudden space stinks like fried meat.
Weird.
The idiom is "all of a sudden". :)
shareThank you for calling out the verbally lazy!
shareWhat does TimMC mean by the "space stinks like fried meat"?
Is it that part in 2010 where the Leonov crew board the derelict Discovery and smell something stale and rotten in the air, because the meat in the galley went bad?
Correct. That was *inside* Discovery which, while ice cold, still had its pressure container intact with breathable air - not space. The Russian astro thought/feared he was smelling the rotting corpses of Discovery's crew but it turned out to be bad meat from the galley.
Not sure how using "the" in place of "a" makes someone verbally lazy.
share"There is no sound in space."
Even if that were true (and it's not entirely true, because space isn't a perfect vacuum), what of it? We, the audience, aren't in space. We're obviously watching the action from home or in a theater, and even if we suspend disbelief to accept that we are watching events that really happened, the unseen microphones could have been positioned anywhere. They could have been, e.g., inside the ship, and you would indeed hear the sounds that the ship makes from inside the ship.
Precisely!
share2001 is a SHITTY MOVIE, VASTLY overrated!
Its a common knowledge that there's no sound in space. Its not a sign of smartness or clevernes of anybody to know that. And 2001 has been given too much credit for this detail. Sure, it showed some balls for going against popular blockbuster mentality by silencing the space scenes, but Kubrick didn't invent the idea of no sound in space.
