There's no way the police or a sheriff would let a civilian near a crime scene, let alone involve her in the investigation, regardless of how close friends they were.

I think that one of the most wonderful things about fiction is that it's... fiction.
well, it's not very likely that a writer would keep stumbling on a murder every week, nor that so many of the murderers or victims would be people personally known to her. i don't think anyone watches Murder She Wrote for the gritty realism.
