scenes without Wayne

I love auf pet and watched it many times. I'm just watching it now, 'hasta la vista' episode and theirs a few scenes where we see Wayne, then next minute hes nowhere to be seen! The one in the Portland where their playing snooker. Now I've just noticed the scene in the club where moxey has a scuffle with Martin, hes their dancing with Oz, then next minute hes disappeared! I wonder what was Wayne's last ever scene he was in??? Anyone know?

He had died.

The story is they'd completed all the outdoor scenes in Spain and returned to Britain to do the interior scenes but Holton died during that time so many scenes are missing him.

I'll admit, when I saw the series originally, I didn't notice his absence. That's probably because there were enough outdoor scenes to make it appear that he was there to the very end. Indeed the final boat chase scene has him in it.

If memory serves, they only used a stand-in for one scene: in the bar in Spain where Wayne is chatting-up Vicki and Bomber picks him up bodily and takes him outside. You never see Wayne's face.

A few interior scenes featuring the rest of the lads have references to Wayne's antics off-screen. These are obviously scenes he should have been part of. Such references are a bit awkward and don't really add much. I guess it seemed like a good idea at the time.

I think the director and editor did a very good job with what they had. I've seen Pet 10-15 times over the years and it's not really noticeable. It certainly doesn't detract from the continuity of the show.

The final episode opens with a still shot of Gary Holton and a voice-over by Tim Healey dedicating that episode to Holton.

I think his death hurts the Spanish episodes to be honest. He's never in the interior scenes (apart from the first one where he, Barry, Moxey, Oz, and Bomber go on a walkabout and go to that empty pub).

It's always "Where's Wayne?", and then some reason like he's still in bed or chatting a woman up. He'd died after the Spanish location filming during the studio filming in in the UK.

There's one scene where they're talking about him and you can blatantly tell that Jimmy Nail is close to tears about his death. It must've been awful to keep putting on a smile and keep filming. The cast just wanted the filming of the second series to be over once Gary Holton died and it's obvious in a lot of the scenes and it ruins the enjoyment of them and leaves a sour taste.

A similar thing happened with James Beck as Private Walker in Dad's Army (S6, Ep6).

The location scenes were the final appearance of James Beck as Private Joe Walker, as these were filmed earlier in May 1973 before the studio scenes and before Beck's death on 6 August 1973. For the studio scenes Walker is referred to but never seen, with the assumption that he is guarding the outside of the house, whilst Private Sponge was given most of Walker's lines.
