I am sick of being downtrodden because this is seen as a national treasure, it is so unfunny, and is devoid of wit. The stereotypes just get irritating after a while, and this cr*p went out for ten years. Doesn't anyone else agree?
Of course it's funny.. it doesn't discriminate.. it pokes fun at the British, the Germans, the French, the Italian and even at the absurdity that there was WWII in the first place. If the writers, Croft and Perry, could have found a way to include the Yanks, Poles, Irish and the Russians in their scripts they would have I am sure. It didn't matter that you could see the jokes comming from a kilometre off, it was how well they were executed, the timing and the occasional varience that made them funny most of the time.
I never like'd "Benny Hill" or "Are You being served", however this was pure pantomine, music hall-style double-entre humour done at a time when that benevolent political correctness crowd were beginning to assert their absurd rules of speech and correct behaviours for us all to adhere to. Thank heaven for this lovely piece of nonsense to fight back with.
This is up there with "Fawlty Towers" as one of the best Britcoms ever. Far superior and funny than any of the canned laughter crap comming out on TV these days imho.
so... chill and ciao
et tu Brute!
Locked my wire coat-hanger in the car - good thing that I always carry spare keys my pocket :)
I absolutely adore the show! Yes, it's stereotyped, but that's the thing. The stereotypes are spot on! I'm crazy about the british airman with their outragously large mustaches (compared to the small, styled French ones), and their overly British way of pronouncing words. "Hellaaauuu..."
I am going through it now, and it is not at that funny. It is not unfunny but not on the same level as Blackadder or Young Ones, or even Absolutely Fabulous.
There are some amusing bits so far, but overall its disappointing.
I wil say it's a bit of an insult to the German Army.
Anyway, its nt that bad, or not so bad that I have given up on it
