I am sick of being downtrodden because this is seen as a national treasure, it is so unfunny, and is devoid of wit. The stereotypes just get irritating after a while, and this cr*p went out for ten years. Doesn't anyone else agree?

If any nationality is unfairly treated in the programme, it isn't the French - the entire thing can be read as a running gag against the English, if anything!

Well here's the irony: it's shown in Belgium and they love it. Although for some reason, a lot of them think the show is set in Belgium.

Allo Allo was actually taking the micky out of the films & TV series that had been made along the same lines, and not of the real life situation itself.
Perhaps it's because it represents a more traditional form of English comedy that you don't find it funny - i.e. it's actually funny and is thankfully free of political correctness. Yeah, I'd stick to Ben Elton's twaddle if I were you - modern and UNFUNNY!

And English history is untouchable? No offence but that is silly. English history is full of amusing evens such as Earl Godwin's death:

'The Blackadder' was a great show (not started by Ben Elton). I do agree that 'Blackadder Goes Fourth' is the best season but the other seasons are good and joke about odd aspects of the past. There is no need for the nationalistic view that comedies about English (or British) history are an insult to the nation. That isn't the case.

Richard Gibson (Herr Flick), Vicki Michelle (Yvette) and Gorden Kaye (Rene) have all enjoyed prolific acting careers since 'Allo 'Allo finished. They have done a lot of theatre work and they have appeared on T.V. quite often. Just because someone is not always on the telly, does that mean their careers are over? No, of course it doesn't.
So no, Guy Siner (Lt. Gruber) isn't the only one who has had a successful acting career. Sam Kelly (Capt. Hans Geering) has been in several sitcoms since the end of the programme, as well as dramas. Sue Hodge (Mimi LaBonque) has set up some sort of Drama college with her husband.
But if you hate it that much, why watch it in the first place? Don't put yourself through hell...it would only cause you pain :-D

Actually, Sam Kelly is a good actor - he was very good in Mike Leigh's 'All or Nothing', and I've seen him in a couple of stage productions.
But generally, I think my comments are correct - you mention theatrical success, but where - are we talking the creatively moribund territory of popular theatre or rep? I know a fair bit about the theatrical scene and attend regularly - I cannot recall the names of any of the cast crossing my path.
Mr. Kelly is going to be in a panto for the next couple of months, the reviews start tomorrow (11/29). It's called Dick Whittington's Cat and it will play at the Barbicon (sp?) in London. He's been in several theatrical performances over the last few years, most with rave reviews. And if you can catch him in an episode of Black Books, alongside Annette Crosby, he's quite funny (Moo-Ma and Moo-Pa). Barbara was so-so, but with some funny parts. Good acting can make anything work, I guess. lol
shareI think it started out being, seriously, very funny.
The first series was great as a spoof of Secret Army. The 2nd, 3rd and maybe 4th series were all hilarious as they expanded on, and re-worked the original joke.
But after a while the jokes got repeated and recycled so often that they got tired. Most of the truly great British comedies ran for 12, 18 or 24 episodes. 'A-'A went on for 85 episodes which was possibly 50-60 too many.
'Only Fools and Horses' ran even longer than 'allo 'allo and it turned out to be one of the best Bristish series ever.

Oh! Oh the irony! I am of French, Polish, but most directly German descent, and I found 'Allo 'Allo to be one of the better comedies of this era. I just couldn't stop laughing!

I like the show because it is well written satire. I like the continuing storyline and the structure of the show. In it's own way, Allo Allo is very intelligently written and produced. Yeah, it's over the top and goofy but it's supposed to be.
Allo Allo is similar to the Vicar of Dibley to me- not very funny but entertaining. They're also two shows that I wouldn't want to admit to anyone that I watch. Instead, I would admit to loving Spaced, The Royale Family, and of course, Blackadder and Fawlty Towers.

They evidently would (and did), because AA always had a live audience, not a laugh track added later.
