How come Barry Convex explodes?

In the scene where Max is shooting Barry Convex he kind of explodes from the inside and out... why is that? Does he has the "tumor" growing in him? Or why is his body reacting the bloody way that it does?

- Does anyone have an explanation for this?

Okay, just read the thread about Max shooting tumor-bullets... that'll explain it. Didn't seem that obvious in the movie and my DVD hasn't got the commentary...

Keep in mind that most of the movie is told through Max's point of view, and he's hallucinating most of the time. Max didn't really shoot Convex with cancer bullets, and Convex didn't really disintegrate like that.

What probably happened is that a crazy person walked into a sales convention, pulled out a gun and shot the speaker dead while yelling "Death to Videodrome!"

I agree, i think its Max's hallucination due to the tumor in his brain.

Mr. O'Blivion would disagree. "The television screen is the retina of the mind's eye. Therefore, the television screen is part of the physical structure of the brain. Therefore, whatever appears on the television screen emerges as raw experience for those who watch it. Therefore, television is reality."
We (and Max) see Convex riddled with gory excresences from the tumor-bullets- that is, therefore, reality.
Actually, I agree that bystanders probably saw Max as a crazed wacko, not some mutant with a gun for a hand, but it is admirable of Cronenberg that he refuses to cut back and forth between Max's POV and "reality". That would only undermine the power of the imagery, and it would give the audience an excuse not to think: seeing the scene through Max's twisted perspective forces us to construct the reality of the scene, piecing together what really must have happened for ourselves.

He doesn't cut back and forth, but he does build into it very well. Max hallucinates the pistol merging into his flesh before killing Moses and Raphael, but when we see him kill them, he pulls the gun from his jacket and his hand and gun are completely normal. But from there it keeps forming into the grotesque phallic pistol as his mind contorts with his growing tumor. Great film.

Noticed, if it is the correct scene, the wall explodes and Max walks out through it into the street. There are a 2 women and a child walking by and neither of them reacted to it - so it prob didn't happen, otherwise they would have ran.

reply

the little child mentioned the explosion though

reply

Yes, also, the mother pulled the child away from Max. So while there was no real explosion per se, the mother knew that Max was dangerous.

reply

The little girl said "Mom, watch this ka-boom!" But you could say it's Max imagining the girl saying that

reply

He shot him full of General Tso's Chicken.

reply

OMG, I just watched this tonight and commented when he exploded that it looked like Yum Yum Chicken was pouring out of him! Great minds think alike.

I wonder if Max ever comes out of the hallucinogenic helmet. The scenes following the optician's visit all seem very unreal… When he visits the optician the 2nd time there even appears to be a picture of Nicky in the shop window (or maybe I was hallucinating). Maybe Max fills up his experiences after the helmet recording with things he knows and everything we see is Max's inner world.

Chaos reigns

Max shoots him and i believe that he does in fact explode from the inside out cause you can see the horrified reactions of the people while he is imploding from the iside out (although it is possible that it might just be a hallucination due to the tumor in his brain)

reply

Well he shot somebody, either way I think that could cause some horrified reactions, simply seeing some maniac running around with a gun who just shot somebody right in front of you.. could also explain any talk of explosions, a gun shot is an explosion.

or maybe not, lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZrTfz10VFs

When Barry put his hand into Max he takes it out and a lot of it has been torn away and he has some mallet thing on the end and when he walks past several of the women workers they react in horror and disgust, so maybe it was more than just Max's subjective hallucination!
