Should this be remade?

All I'm asking is would you rather have it remade with the CGI we have today so it could be much more visually stunning and possibly more true to the book...or would you prefer to let a good (or bad depending on your opinion)thing lay to rest. I doubt they'd remake it but it seems that today nobody is coming out with a new film. All people are doing is remaking films.

Years from now directors, writers, etc. won't go "Oh hey! I loved this film from 2004-2005! Let's remake it because it was so original!" because everything is being remade, sequeled, rehashed, etc. Though if they were to remake this (released right around the time of most other films being remade, or films based off of books being rehashed by directors.) would you thumbs up it, or leave it be?

I remember reading the novel when I was about 10. I had a vivid imagination at the time and it left a big impression on me. I can still remember how I felt when I read the hot air balloon scene.

I saw the film a few years later, and it was a big disappointment.

I would love to see a remake that captures the atmosphere of the book. I know it can be done - it was done with the Martian Chronicles after all.

There's not many directors who could pull it off. Top of the list would have to be Peter Jackson. Next would be Frank Darabont.

I think they would ruin it with big, flashy, noisy CGI stuff.

Personally, I don't think this movie is as bad or flawed as many here seem to suggest. Obviously it doesn't match the novel for emotional power, but what movie adaptations do? As far as CGI being an 'improvement' over what was managed in this movie in 1983, I strongly disagree. I'm yet to see truly convincing CGI (though I'm sure the best is yet to come). I think Something Wicked This Way Comes, as a Disney film from the early 80s, is a qualified success.

So, no re-make needed, certainly not for the sake of what CGI may be able to bring.

If they did remake the movie they would never find a better performance than that of Jonathan Pryce. He was totally believable as Mr. Dark.

A remake could be fun but with a good director and some top class actors

No remake please.

CGI sucks, it lacks the visceral and immersive creepiness of real physical effects. CGI is only good for movies underwater and in space.

I think Something Wicked This Way Comes should be adapted to the small screen rather than in theaters. It is impossible to resist the siren call of too much CGI on the big screen, but TV is different if made by the right folks. I am all for seeing books get adapted again if they have been done once before. I don't consider that a remake, I consider it a new attempt to bring the story to life. Another book I feel needs to been done again is Stephen King's The Langoliers. What a great story that was brought to life with awful effects and a bland cast.

Remake, yes! Only because the original wasn't so great to begin with! Maybe a project for Burton?

reply

Absolutely. Please, please remake this. I love the book and when I tried to watch the original movie I had to turn it off. I am not one of those people who thinks that the movie must be exactly like the book, but at least be true to the spirit of it. It could be so good, and deserves a second chance.
