i know it was supposed to be heroic thing to do but he would have died if it wasn’t for vader interfering. or was it about having faith?

His line.... "like my father before me"... He had faith his father would come around and help defeat the Emperor.
No. It meant he would rather die as a Jedi, like his father once was, than to destroy Vader and become him.
shareSo basically he'd lost and his plan was to suicide to avoid losing by being turned?
He should have thrown himself out of the window again like he did in ep5 , who knows Lando might be there to save him.
It was always his plan to die.
"Soon I'll be dead. And you with me." His faith was in the Alliance to achieve the destruction of the Death Star, while he was on it confronting Vader and the Emperor, as was his supposed destiny. Palpatine attempted to shake his faith in the Alliance.
Luke had hoped that his father would listen to the good he sensed in him turn back. But Vader was unrepentant and goaded Luke by telling him that if Luke died, he'll just turn his sister instead. This caused Luke to almost kill the father he'd previously swore he would not fight.
