the rebels hi-jacked it at the end of the movie and took it over to make a base for the new republic. maybe get rid of the laser?

In my mind it would be too much of a risk and would encourage evil forces to try and take it back, an ongoing issue in the galaxy.

Ultimate Power ultimately corrupts. As this is also one of Lucas Themes within the Star Wars universe, I am confident it would have happened to all of them, the Dark Side had corrupted the Rebels and it had ended with the Rebels destroying Imperial Worlds. So no, it is better this way.
