Daft killing off Bobba Fett
I know that Lucas thought he wasn't that popular (until later) but Bobba looked cool?

shareLucas polished off all of the main antagonists in the OT, why shouldn't he finish off overrated Boba Fett? Aren't you even satisfied that it was Han Solo that whacked him in the jetpack that made him fly out of control and into the Sarlaac's mouth?
Yeah. And he died in a really stupid way too. Still movie wise he wasn't in them very much at all.
shareFor a character that made his debut in the Holiday Special, this was appropriate.
shareYeah he is cool but no need to be so butt-hurt about it !
shareLucas should have shot the Sarlac scene more ambiguously so we're not sure if Boba survives or not. Then Boba could have come back unexpectedly at the last moment in Slave One during the Battle of the Second Death Star. He could have gone after Lando thinking Han was in the Millennium Falcon. Think of it as an inversion of Han Solo coming back in the Millennium at the last minute in A New Hope. That would have raised the stakes and kicked things up a notch. Lando blowing Boba Fett out of the stars would have gotten a HUGE cheer from the audience, methinks.
sharethat's interesting, the idea of him going after lando in the falcon. i always imagined him going to endor. there was a short film called return of the ewok where he stalks an ewok through a ships corridor.
shareHis beef was with Solo mostly. It works because he would have no way of knowing who was flying the Falcon. Also, there was so much happening on Endor and the Death Star to begin with, adding one more element in either of those locations would have been too much, I think. The Battle of the Second Death Star could have used a bit of more spice, something unexpected, considering how similar it was to the first movie already.
shareyes, i like that idea. would have been cool.
shareThey had Boba survive in the books, just barely, but it was great. I don't read a lot of Star wars novels, but I'd recommend The Mandalorian Armor just to see this play out.
shareThe true Lucas began to show in this movie. The downhill slide began and only got steeper.
shareInteresting. In what way does the lame killing of Boba reveal Lucas' true nature in your opinion?
shareIt showed that he was already tone deaf to his fans. This very minor character had become a beloved figure, despite being a villain and only having 4 lines. Rather than giving him more screen time in this movie, or even keeping him alive for potential future use, he kills him off quickly in a way that was meant to be comedic, capped off by the Sarlaac belching.
sharePersonally, I think there was more to it. There wasn't even any need to bring Boba back. He was clearly conceived as a "cool" character, so killing him off in a comedic way seems contradicting. I really think Lucas developed some kind of dislike for the character for whatever reason.
shareI agree with both of you. I think he really was tone deaf to his fans and even resentful toward fans for liking the wrong things for the wrong reasons. His focus on "it's for the kids" had metastasized in this movie and he revealed that he was willing to dispose of anything in favor of the child-friendly approach. It's like he was terrified that he had made so many "kids" love a bounty hunter villain and decided to be a more responsible movie maker. So he gave us a zany disposal as if to say "see, kids? Bad guys aren't so cool, right?" Look at how he swiftly disposed of Maul.
The movie had the shift from murderous combat over to "hands up, I got ya covered" style crap. Not to mention the cuddly (yet satisfyingly carnivorous) Ewoks fighting like the Swiss Family Robinson with traps designed for fun rather than logistics.
He hated people liking the franchise for anything other than what he wanted them to like it for.

That's honestly the impression I get. But who knows, the guy is just weird.
What's really baffling is the mistake of killing Boba was very clear by the time the prequels came along, the EU well established, and yet there Lucas goes again killing off Maul. Not understanding the popularity and potential of these characters he's cooking up. That's why we gotta keep bringing all these characters back from the dead.
shareThe best scene with BF is in the CGI barf version of Star Wars when the camera pans to him at moseisely station and he looks right at it and nods.
sorry which version now?
sharedid that happen? is that in the movie? i've never seen the new versions.
shareIn A New Hope they added as shot where the camera pans over to him standing there looking right at the camera for like 5 seconds.
They might as well have had Lucas face popup and said look it’s BF!
lmao i gotta see this! i've seen most of the other new clips in youtube videos bashing them, but not that one. when they started doing that nonsense, i made a decision that I only ever wanted the original versions of the movies to live in my head, so I avoided them.
shareIt’s right after they leave the cantina before the blast their way out in the falcon.
The endless CGI in the new versions of the OT is just so distracting. It’s not even realistic. Coming into moseisely station looks more like a zoo when animals running all over and the classic post ANH comedy bit of the dude falling off the dinosaur.
I catch it once in a while in TV and still recognize all pointless changes. I have the last pre CGI remaster on Laser Disc. I don’t think they ever released them on DVD. It’s a shame.
I still watch them THX video tapes they released. Bought a huge over sized boob tube tv from a bar that was converting to the new flat panel tellys. Got a whole VHS lair set up. Mostly just watch porn in there.... But sometimes Nintendo.
I know a lot of people today who've never even seen the originals. They only know the new versions. It's normal to them. Just like Lucas wanted. SMH
