Seems like people hate it because they're supposed to, like odd-numbered Star Trek movies and Rocky sequels. The fact is Bond is very well represented here, all the important elements are present without the silly stuff, and the movie is well-paced and brilliantly cast.
I like it a lot, too. I like that they get into Bond being old now. I do wish they'd pushed that further, more along what Wrath of Khan did with Kirk, but the bit we get is nice, and predates Skyfall using a similar thematic arc/motif. It's done a bit slicker in Skyfall, I think, but it's not bad here, especially at the beginning of the film.
It's not the film's fault, but it does suffer from a 007 uncanny valley effect where the opening scene gets cooking and the Bond theme by John Barry doesn't kick in, and that's a little unsettling. That's the biggest loss of it not being an EON show. It's like when Superman movies don't have the John Williams score. Likewise, I sorta miss stuff like the gun barrel opener. These are quibbles and, again, I know it's hardly the fault of the film, but it's still a little missing puzzle piece that winds up badgering the brain a bit while viewing.
I like this movie too. I used to think the opening was terrible with no gun barrel sequence but now I like seeing that weird 007 template moving towards the screen with the filming of the south American river scene from a helicopter emerging and the jarring opening bars of music. Brings me back to when I was a kid. Big pat roach throwing bond about through the health farm, was funny........ Indeed!
I always liked NSNA. Growing up, I always knew there was an "unofficial" Bond movie, but my mind always gravitated towards the belief that this had to be Diamonds Are Forever - because that's the only Bond movie that doesn't feel like a Bond movie. NSNA, on the other hand, fits right in with the rest. I really like it.
yes this movie was such a treat. i didnt even know it existed just went to bed with my tv playing james bond movie folder and woke up to this gem. sean connery bond in the 80s what more can u ask for? this movie is epic just like all of the connery bond films
Dang it's all about money for some people. He did it because he was ready to and it was a good flick. It's an entertaining, light hearten and fun movie. It's no worse than any of the stuff Roger did the decade before. In fact I saw this one in the theater the same Summer as Octopussy and this one holds up much better.
