The EON documentary is rather dishonest, historically. The truth of the matter is, EON tried systematically, day after day of NSNA's production, to shut it down. There was a time when cast members like Basinger and Carrera wondered if the film would be finished at all. Not to mention the climax had been re-written a record 16 times - 16! At the behest of EON's legion of lawyers who just did everything to harm the film.
Truth is, McClory had a valid claim to do the film, as it was part of his agreement with EON back on Thunderball. He asked Connery to do it with him because Connery was away from the role for a while and he promised him creative control - which he craved for. And over the course of eight years, NSNA eventually got made, partly thanks to Jack Schwarzman, who was a lawyer and managed to get McClory to have the film made through him.
And Connery really did want to come back, and depict the character at the older age. He largely enjoyed playing the character, but as someone with a stake at the production, he HATED dealing with the production problems caused by EON.
Its about time this was cleared up. Please seek out and read BATTLE FOR BOND by Robert Sellers, which details both the making of Thunderball and NSNA, along with the genesis of the novel and McClory's role in this story.
PS: Kevin McClory DIDN'T kill Ian Fleming. Which the documentary kinda obviously implies.
