Have you been to the locations in Local Hero?

Hello everyone,

I am researching a study about film tourism, on behalf of the UK screen agencies, and am trying to find out how people discover where films have been shot. Local Hero, for instance, was shot in the village of Pennan in Aberdeenshire, and also at a beach in Morar, on the West coast of Scotland, and both places have become places of pilgrimage for fans of the film. I'm interested in how those who wish to visit the places seen in the film find out about the locations of shooting. Has anyone been to Pennan, or Morar, on the back of seeing Local Hero? If so, how did they find out the film was shot there? Was it through the internet, or newspaper articles, or friends?

Any help you can give me would me much appreciated, and will help villages such as Pennan benefit from their starring role on screen.

Many thanks,

Lucy

No, but I must. It's just so far away (I live in London) and expensive to get to. I've been to Glasgow and Edinburgh a few times but I really wish I'd gone when I was at university nearby in the north east of England and it was more practical. But after reading some of the inspiring replies on this thread, I think I'll organise myself to go later in the year.

I will travel all the way from Hong Kong next summer to visit Pennan, and if I'm lucky get to the beach as well, but that's doubtful. Will also spend some time on Bute. This has been a long-time coming as I saw the film when it first came out in a theatre in Vancouver.

Have been in touch with the Pennan Inn and it is open with three rooms to let and lovely meals served in the dining room.

Go to the beach if you can. It's one of the most beautiful spots in the world, with views across the sea to the islands of Eigg and Rhum.
