It's been fascinating to watch the opinion of this movie change over the years.

Circa 2003 - Everyone thought this movie was the worst of the franchise by far. Many went so far as to say even taken on it's own merits it's objectively awful.

Circa 2013 - Some people started claiming this movie was actually pretty good. If it was simply Season of the Witch it would possibly be considered a cult classic. The title and expectations for a Myers slasher sequel are what soured people to it.

Circa 2023 - For many this is the second best Halloween movie and for some it's even better than the 1978 movie.

It's the exact same movie as it was back in 1982. It's simply the narrative around it has changed. It's largely groupthink. Enough people champion it and suddenly more people bandwagon. You're now 'allowed' to like it.

Here's a chart of it's IMDb rating history from 2005-2020.

I just watched this movie for the first time and it's solid, goofy, campy B-movie fun. A very 80's horror film if I've ever seen and probably one worth recommending if you're looking for a horror movie with an extremely 80's nostalgia vibe. It's well-made and has one of the best John Carpenter scores. It's a nice 7/10. People calling better than the original Halloween is ridiculous but I also could NEVER understand how this movie had as low as a 3.4/10 at some point! 3.4 is reserved for the bottom of the barrell and this is far from it. People thought this was worse than Halloween 6 or Ressurection? This film is legitimately creepy, though sometimes silly and cheesy as hell.

I had heard about this movie for many years but only got around to watching it around 26. Personally it is (and always was) my favorite of the sequels because it actually tries to do something different than just focusing on a single maniac going around killing people. I like horror movies that get away from that tired trope as well as other overused villains like vampires and werewolves.

Also, I love the gloomy, paranoid atmosphere of the film as it makes a great coupling with THE THING, my favorite John Carpenter movie. It helps that the director of photography, cinematographer, and composers are the same (adjusting for Morricone being absent, but I prefer all the Carpenter/Howarth music from THE THING anyway).

People were just alot dumber back then. “Durrr no mike myers???? Durrr movie bad!!!” And they completey ignore the outstanding atmosphere that makes the movie so great.

They hated The Thing too. “Durrr too gory durrr”
