Okay, so go watch "Elf".

Another overrated movie. Where did I say it was an either or proposition?

Where did liscarkat? He/she just offered a Christmas movie suggestion that might be a potential favorite for you.

For curiosity's sake, what do you consider a beloved Christmas movie?

reply

I've been a big fan of this movie since middle school (mid 1990's) and always looked forward to watching it.

It's hilarious, heartfelt, endlessly quotable, and a poignant nostalgic reminder of the golden age of the American middle-class.

What do you consider a worthy Christmas classic?

reply

I watched it for the first time last week and loved it.

It's one of those moves that gives you a warm fuzzy feeling.

It also has a great, authentic period setting.

Plus some great, quirky characters such as Darrren MCGavin as the father.

But the thing that struck me most is that I reckon this movie influenced Rob Reiner's Stand By Me, with the narration and realistic portrayal of the kids.

I'm glad you liked it!

Interesting. That had never really occurred to me before, but now that you mention it that makes perfect sense. I think that influence also probably brought us 'The Sandlot,' another classic nostalgic period piece with voice-over narration and realistic portrayal of kids.

It's ok to have a differing opinion.

I like it.
