The first text in movie history.

This is a first.

Two main characters have a bulky "portable computer". Walken's character plugs his in to a phone booth and types "I'm crazy about you" to his lover. His lover replies from another bulky "portable computer", "I love you".

This qualifies as the first real example of "texting" in movie history. Dedicated computers do not qualify.

Year 1983.

You could be right. The only other movie I can think of is The Abyss.

And now, unfortunately, texting in movies is done all the time, and it's really annoying because either it's difficult to see, they don't leave it on-screen long enough, or both.
