I just noticed right after Kessler pops Warren in the forehead the very next scene shows Kessler with his forearms up toward McAnn, as though he were giving himself up to be handcuffed. I suppose what he did to Warren was unlawful, but does anyone know if Kessler was supposed to be arrested at the end?
Man, if the LAPD sucked that bad in real life in 1983, it's no wonder that things were so much worse in 1991. Considering that they weren't even that mad when he (Kesler) fabricated evidence and caused a dismissal of charges on Stacey, maybe they were just going to go through the motions of arresting him.
He probably would have been taken into custody, but after the dust settled, he would have been released, I believe. Although he did lose his job as a cop even before.
<Cold blood? I'd say the young punk was the cold-blooded killer in THAT scene. If some jerk had killed a dorm full of girls, and then went after my daughter, I'd let him have it between the eyes too. Save the taxpayers the cost of a trial. Temporary "insanity", I say, yet all too sane. >
- He's armed. - He'd broken free from other officers who were attempting to restrain him. - He's covered in the fresh blood of victims. - He's screaming death threats.
How do you figure he had no reason to shoot the guy?
I may not know a lot, but I do know "a lot" is two words.
Lat's be realistic about how this would actually be resolved: The only witnesses were the daughter & other cops. At this point, I'm sure that even his politically correct partner would join with the other cops, put a weapon in the dead man's hand, give the Bronson character a superficial wound with the same weapon, & lie their asses off about what happened. Between that, & all that -did- happen: Bronson's character is totally exonerated within hours.
IMHO he's toast - he killed in cold blood while the bad guy was being arrested - he's 100% sane and I just don't see him playing crazy - he did the false evidence thing and that would play against him, they can blame the girls mayhem on his little game with naked killer
That's just MHO of course ==================== Omae wa mo shindeiru
I think given the multiple dead bodies that were slashed up in the apartment, the killing of Warren by Kessler was justified and he should have been rewarded.
Warren would have beat the system on the insanity plea and been out after three years.
Stacey technically was still a threat because he still had a knife and already broken free from 2 other cops who were trying to restrain him at that time.
He may have gone to trial, but there's no way a jury of twelve people, many of whom would probably have daughters, would convict a previously lauded cop for shooting a despicable killer who had just been chasing his daughter down the street, naked and brandishing a knife. Most people think along the same lines as Bronson did, not the "letter of the law."
Probably he was arrested for a while. Like real life, the respectful people are seen with worst eyes when they commit acts of justice , while the criminals are seen with all the excuses possible. Cold blood ? I would like to know how you would react if someone of your family were killed by someone like Warren.
Yeah but the cops all showed up on time with the intention of arresting the nude guy and judging by how he appeared he would've looked as guilty as sin especially with a knife in his hand. So, kessler killing the nude guy would have been an act of a vigilante- he killed a guy at point bland range cold blooded so he would have been arrested for murder. Also, he planted evidence on the killers clothes.
Holding a knife absolutely counts, as a knife is considered a lethal weapon. Especially when you consider he'd just gone on a spree kill using that same weapon.
So, if a dude runs at you with a knife and you shoot him, you're ok.
If a dude runs at you with a knife and you shoot him.. shoot him again if you have to, but make sure he's dead-- if you just wound him, with a good lawyer he can make you look like the bad guy. Hell, he could even sue you for millions.
And this movie had all kinds of holes and problems, but Charles Bronson still put the "kickass" in "kickass." At the end he's just waiting for Stacy to wind down so he can say his awesome ending line. :D
First off, this thread should have Spoilers written all over it. Read the OP's first line. OOps.
Second, as others mention, where did Kessler come from, he's hell of a runner, knew a great shortcut, or found a bicycle.
Regarding the shooting of bloody, naked guy. Kessler, being a long time former cop, has more responsibility to act lawfully, than an average Joe. Naked guy was not allowed his day in court. Likely Kessler would serve some time and definately never get his badge back.
Just some FINE editing in that final scene. Bronson shows up from the other end of the street, somehow, someway, even though those other 2 have been running for like 2 full minutes at twice the speed beforehand. Classic.
THEN, the cops rush up to arrest Mr. Naked, one cop on each side - but then they, for GOD KNOWS what reason, let him go just before Bronson pops him, so that there's no one 'near' the guy when he gets killed.
Terrible, terrible editing. But WTF, this is a CHARLES BRONSON movie! Who cares? You rock, Charlie!
Actually, an exonneration would be a slam dunk in Kessler's case, especially upon closer examination. There are so many mitigating factors. The killer is armed, resisting arrest, and screaming death threats. And I'm so sick of all these bleeding heart crybabies saying that Stacy was a "victim of society" and what Kessler did was "cold-blooded." Stacy was an out of control sociopath. The system would have went easy on him and locked him up in a sanitarium where he's still a threat. People need to recognize that some sicknesses of the mind just aren't curable, and that the proper thing to do is dispatch some of these rabid *beep* dogs before they can harm others.
To the world you may just be somebody, but to somebody you may just be the world.
He would've been arrested for sure - standard protocol as Kessler was not a cop, having been relieved of duty earlier. No trial - Kessler would have a plead deal - would've ended with a manslaughter charge, no time in prison just probation because of the circumstances involved. Still, Kessler would never be able to be a cop again or do any kind of private investigative work either with a felony on his record.
Second, McAnn would've been either relieved of duty and kicked out, or at the very least demoted back to patrol cop with a serious reprimand on his record never allowing him back to detective work, because he followed improper protocol by allowing Kessler to hold the gun on the guy. McAnn should've ordered Kessler to drop his weapon and take over from there. That didn't happen, so Kessler failed to perform his duty properly in a big way.
I just watched this a 5th time, and saw this comment earlier this week, so I paid more attention to the ending. Good news. As he was being arrested, Warren seems to break free from the cops putting the cuffs on and still has the knife, and then lunges slightly forward. This is more than enough reason for Kessler to get off. He'll be fine.
