Did Mama ever make you mad?

I love Mama's Family, and Thelma is my favorite character but sometimes Mama really made me upset with her behavior. For example when Vint and Naomi wanted to adopt a child and they had to visit the shrink. Mama totally ruined their chances of adoption by making the session all about her. It WAS hilarious though, found myself laughing out loud but if I was either Vint or Naomi I would have been thoroughly upset with Mama. Which is probably why in that episode Vint grew balls temporarily and threatened to move out.

Were there any other times during the series run when Mama just got under your skin?

Yeah that was one time, I wish Eunice had been in some of those episodes to stand up to Mama, Eunice was about the only one who was not afraid to stand up to her.

I HATED it when an innocent person who was just doing their job got into Mama's line of fire. Like the elderly man who was handling Fran's will, I thought Mama treated him horribly. I mean she offers him cookies, then he decides to take one, and she SLAPS his hand and says, "You've had enough damn cookies!" when he had not even had ONE yet. Would not have taken ME long to put the old bat in her place!

Or like at the airport when Mama grabbed the man up out of his seat and said "MOVE IT!" so they could all sit together. I just have a thing about seeing ppl put their hands on someone else and someone innocent who is not even involved in the conflict be treated bad.

When she worked at Food Circus. She was so annoying in that episode

Whenever Bubba would say something and she would hit or pinch Vintage.

Vint.

The time she got pissed off when the lawyer representing Fran's estate pointed out the paint marks on her dress. If she inherited the money, buying a new dress would've been a snap.

On a similar note, the time she wouldn't go along with that crooked lawyer's plan after falling at the bank after Iola accidentally called her "mother". That could've costed her family millions of dollars in a lawsuit.

Yes I agree! There were several occasions when Mama made the family lose out easy money. Sometimes, if Mama would have just SHUT UP, she could have had Vint and Naomi out her house just like she wanted.

Yes, there are quite a number of times that I watched the show and felt myself getting mad at Mama for butting her nose into other people's business or affairs when she shouldn't of, but one time really stands out in particular more than others: I don't remember the name of the episode but I do remember Naomi was trying to have some kinda party and Mama throws her back out and ends up laying in middle of the living room floor with all of Naomi's party guests having to attend to her every need, even feeding her, helping her drink her beer with a straw, and wiping the crumbs from her face like some kinda queen surrounded by her slaves! Naomi keeps saying Mama would be more comfortable in bed but Mama keeps saying she didn't want to move (besides that one really can't move anyway with a throw-out back, plus the fact that Mama REALLY did want to spoil the party by being in the way on purpose). Every time Mama would tell them not to mind her and just pretend like she isn't there and to enjoy the party, they would start to go back to having a good time, but then Mama would open her big mouth and say something like "Don't worry about me, I'm just a poor old widow woman, who nobody cares about, or notices, but don't mind me. You just all go ahead and have a good time", thus putting the party guests on a bad guilt streak and eventually ruining Naomi's party. I don't blame Naomi in the end for turning the lights out, going to bed, and leaving Mama on the floor in the dark by herself! Naomi was pissed and I would be too if I were her!

That's the thing, sometimes ppl stood up to Mama in the NBC episodes and she was sometimes made a fool of, but in the syndicated episodes it was like Mama ruled the WHOLE world.

reply

I dunno if it's been mentioned but it pissed me off when she lost at the horse races and ground Bubba...just cuz she was pissed.

reply

No, Mama was supposed to be an uptight old crank. That was part of the humor in the show. Without it there wouldn't have been a show.

That's the thing though, even though feisty, Mama was usually portrayed to be the "good guy" but sometimes she came across as a bully.
