Where's this movie been hiding?

Flipping around the channels(no cable), I ran across this movie on one of the L.A. spanish language stations. My spanish is very bad, so I watch dubbed "American" movies and let the spanish flow over me, hoping to reabsorb some. I figured it was a disaster movie, judging by the cast, but I couldn't place it.

After reading the comments on imdb, I'm turning off my TV, and I'll wait until I can find it on video.

I'd never heard of it until it popped up as a recommendation on blockbuster.com We had HBO in the early 80s and I don't recall this movie at all. Must have had distribution problems for a long long time until recently.

I found this used on Amazon.co.uk, picked it up for the fun of it, and it was a good film. :)

It does look kind of prophetic in soem ways even though it's deliberately tongue-in-cheek. Satellite tracking of phone calls and so on, threats of massiive bombs (nukes?) against New York and Jerusalem by Arab terrorists, surveillöance laws put in place more or less arbirarily, media conflicts and spin. This is unerrlingly right - much of that stuff was staple in seventies agent films but it's very rare to find it brought together in one story in a way that gets so close to the actual post-2001 realities.

This movie was released in the early '80s, picked up by cable (HBO/Cinemax as I recollect) then disappeared into the abyss. I think it's one of those films that "they" would rather we didn't see. However, it's still available on DVD -- I picked up a region 1 copy off of Amazon about two years ago. If you enjoy dark comedy and political satire, this one's a BEAUT! G.D Spradlin is in exceptionally fine form as the CIA's DCI and Robert "Go ahead, I dare ya" Conrad is an absolute hoot as the chairman of the JCS.

I picked it up at the local library for free, seems like a good one, watching it now

I didn't think it was very good. The plot was all over the place, and while it was a tad prophetic, what with the Middle East and terrorism, it just didn't seem coherent. The plot was just all over the place. There's a good reason why this film is so hard to find...

Excellent satire of media and politics, and prophetic to boot. Deserves to be better known. I'm guessing it was buried at the time because it was simply too close to the truth.

Yes, it's rather zany with the plot being all over the place, but in my opinion that only adds to the charm.

Highly recommended if you like films such as Dr. Strangelove, Network and Wag the Dog.

Yeah it's a bit of a mess, but a highly adventurous and entertaining one - and its certain lack of coherence may indeed be a positive quality, in fact. Not to mention all this stuff about Arabs, oil, suicide bombers and climaxes on top of the WTC seem more relevant now than they did back in 1982 when it all must have come across as a product of some rather lively fantasy at work. A real curious little number and more than just a piece of distraction for an evening. I dig it.
