Original

Am I the only one who liked the original better?

reply

You might be.

There are tons of people who still do, mostly people from that generation. I know James Rolfe (the Angry Video Game Nerd) did a YouTube video essay about why/how the 50's version is better than the 80's version, though I disagree with most of his points about the 82 film.

Are you an old chap?

I think people prefer the movies of their youth, of their generation. Older folks prefer the original, middle aged people prefer the '82 movie whilst younger viewers are siding with the 2011 prequel. Of course these preference divisions aren't hard set.

I mean when you take away the gore and explosions this is just a colorized version of the original, so I can see why some would maybe prefer the original if you don't care for that low brow entertainment.

Actually, no -- late 50s. But I saw the original long before I saw the remake.

I can see why some people would prefer the original. Carpenter's over the top gore effects might be just too much for some viewers. I myself was disgusted by them when I first saw it and I needed a couple of viewings to appreciate the whole movie and the atmosphere. Nowadays I prefer Carpenter's remake, seen it several times over the years. I have no similar urge to revisit the original movie. I mostly remember an unintentionally funny scene from it, when a-man-in-alien-suite throws dogs around in a snow blizzard or something like that. It wasn't possible to film the concept Carpenter had in mind back when the original was made. Carpenter's remake brought the science to the 80's.
