Nathan was clearly Bipolar, with his erratic behaviour, mood swings, aggression, delusions, suicidal behavior, obsession with reading, and brilliance, which seems to work in a cycle. It is interesting to note that historically, Bipolar disorder was misdiagnosed as schizophrenia.

He was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia-- he did exhibit paranoia and imagining things as Sophie herself told Stingo about Nathan.

That IS interesting. But weren’t Nathan‘s manic sequences caused by cocaine?
