Seems like the above are the solid favorites, at least around here. And their first album with Syd Barett is, of course, a certain Nr. 6. I also have great affection for the post-Wall work, as well. The Final Cut is a solid Waters-solo effort, just as Momentary Lapse of Reason is a solid Gilmour-solo effort. And really, The Division Bell is as much Pink Floyd as any Waters-led effort. And High Hopes is the ideal farewell song for this unique band.

Assuming this is supposed to be my top five favorite albums and not some more objective ranking; then, keeping in mind that decades of radio overexposure have dulled the impact of the more prominent albums and songs.

In reverse order:

Honorable mention: A Saucerful of Secrets. It gets overlooked because Barrett was noodling off and Waters was just gearing up for the long haul. Favorites: "Remember a Day," "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun," "Corporal Clegg."

5. Wish You Were Here

The three short songs are classic-rock staples and have long lost their luster, but the multi-part "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" retains some tasty moments, particularly the jazz-rock passage near the end.


4. The Dark Side of the Moon

Another one played to death, although I still tell people that this was the first real rock and roll record I ever bought. The biggies are too familiar now, but I can never get enough of "Any Colour You Like," and "The Great Gig in the Sky" still gives me chills--this is the song I want to be played at my funeral.


3. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn

This warped folk-rock would have been inconceivable under humorless autocrat Waters. "Bike" and "The Gnome" are psychedelic confections while "Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk" and "Interstellar Overdrive" are great rockers. And Voivod did cover "Astronomy Domine."

2. Meddle

"Echoes" still has depths worth plumbing, and while "One of the Days" is becoming a bit familiar, "Fearless" is a great transitional song from the space-rock explorers to the polished technocrats.

1. Animals

Dogs" is still a big favorite even as "Sheep" has become my number one here. The second edition of The Rolling Stone Record Guide sums up this album brilliantly: "One long execution by Orwellian allegory." "Four legs good--two legs better!"

Tough call as I have never been one to have favorites. I don't have a favorite band, album, movie or TV show. I get hooked on one band, then another then another. I like variety, how to pick just one? A top 5 is a little easier, but to rank them by number...well that changes over the years, but I will try.

WHAT NO Dark Side Of The Moon OR The Wall?! Great albums of course, but way too overplayed, so even though I enjoy them very much, I very rarely listen to them.
