For me The Beatles are easy number 1. Huge fan of both Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin and its really hard for me to pick between the two. I will go with Floyd, but by a thin hair.

I also like Maiden but they are not nearly as close on the top list. Who are good as well, but not a personal favorite. I don't care at all for AC/DC.

Slayer. They put ever other rock band to shame!

Excuse me. Just what the hell is going on here?

Iron Maiden, with Floyd coming in second!

1. The Beatles (more range, different styles, consistent with good material all through their career)
2. Led Zeppelin - Pink Floyd (tie, beautiful and dark, twisted and happy, no good last albums)
3. The Who (Rock n' Roll at it's finest! Hate later Who though)
4. AC/DC (Same sound, but it works to an extent.)
5. Iron Maiden (WTF is it doing here)

- Prometheus (8/10, better than anticipated!)
- The Dark Knight Rises
- Django Unchained

Because without them, you don't have the first generation of rock and roll that made all subsequent generations possible.

And that's just white rock. Ray Charles and James Brown did the same for soul/R&B/funk/etc.

It really depends how you're defining greatest band.

Yes the Beatles has a zillion #1 songs, so does Katy Perry. But is their music complex and innovative? Sorry a 2min song that consists of 2 notes and the chorus is 90% of the lyrics is not complex or innovative. That sums up Sgt Peppers, the album of all albums according to Beatles lovers. Thats fine if you love them, but they simply are not on the level musically as Floyd or Zeppelin. Sgt Peppers is an album that sounds like romper room. A bunch of children banging instruments playing 2 notes at best. If the Beatles were so incredibly innovative, the Monkeys couldn't have been invented to duplicate the Beatles in a matter of minutes.

Now take Pink Floyd, or Led Zeppelin. 2 of the greatest most innovative and influential rock bands of all time. You could never have a Monkeys version of either. In order to duplicate their music, one has to be a true artist and musician in every way. Songs that top the 10 minute mark. Albums that are really one long song, a story, and opera. Music that heavily inspired and influenced rock music for 30 years and still does to this day. Thats Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. The Beatles are more an example of how to manipulate the media and make a pop band. They'd be comparable to todays Justin Bieber and Nicki Minage.

Bands worthy of being in the conversation, certainly The Who. The Rolling Stones for their longevity. U2. And sure the Beatles can be in there for their ability to be "pop"ular.

Iron Maiden and AC/DC? Um no.

When comparing bands like Floyd, Zeppelin, and the Beatles, a lot of it has to do with one's mood at the time.

For example, for a party choice I'd go with Zeppelin. Once it became late at night, I'd put Floyd on. While both bands are similar in their styles, as you said, Zeppelin has more "rocker" songs than Floyd.

As for the Beatles, I consider them a little more universally listenable compared to the other 2 bands, based entirely on their range of music. While the Beatles have plenty of rockers, they also have quite a few romantic songs and sad songs.

If I were to rate them on their musical talent alone, I would give the nod to Zeppelin, for having the best guitarist in Jimmy Page, the best drummer in John Bonham, and the best singer in Robert Plant.

For songwriting, I'd give a slight edge to Floyd though. I think they're much more introspective in their style.

I haven't looked at the other messages yet but why no love for Black Sabbath, they belong in the ultimate echelon of greats, original lineup.

I admit nothing!
