I realize at the time the scene with the meatgrinder was symbolic of something bigger, but I made the mistake when I was 7 to watch Siskel&Ebert review of the Wall and was permanently frightened by the scene where the kids fell in the meatgrinder. To this day I still have problems with this scene alone even though I have seen this movie many times, and love this movie to death. Anyone else bothered by this?
It's unfortunate that you saw that scene out of context at such a young age. I can understand why it affected you like it did. In the film's context, the scene is a blunt statement on the quality of schooling in some areas. I was in my 20's when I saw the film in the theater in '82. It hits home with me now even more since I am now the parent of two wonderful adult children who both had experiences with bad schools.
Sam, if you've got weapons lock on that son of a bitch, TAKE HIM OUT!!
I saw this scene when I was about five or six, and my dad was watching it on VH1. I went to a Catholic school at the time, and associated what was going on in the movie with my own school. Needless to say, it scarred me for a good ten years until I was fifteen and watched the film fully. I adore this movie, but this scene still gives me the jibblies. :/
"That's just making him angry!" "He was already angry!"
I used to like the song that had the kids singing "we dont need no education".
As a kid, of course I went to bed early, and before my parents. One night I heard that song I liked, coming from the TV room. So, I crept in, and saw the meatgrinder scene.
Should have stayed in bed. Not only did that scene screw me up, but after that I couldn't even watch "You Can't Do that on Television" again. Also, I hated that song for a while. Now I am ok with it.
I've never seen the entire movie. I can't think of a context in which that scene would not eff me up again...
Yeah, I can't listen to that song any more either. I just blame my high school art teacher for showing us this in class for some reason (killing time, I presume), and my Film Studies teacher for, well, not picking something else.
It definitely left some scars on me too. I also accidentally saw the scene when it was left on in my living room when I was little. The whole movie is completely screwed up though, I can't watch it or listen to the songs, it's just too disturbing for me.
i can't believe that everyone was scared by this scene. It is indeed a powerful piece of imagery, but is a metaphor. It's not like watching a horror movie.Didn't creeped me up,and the whole movie is an intense psychedilic experience,if you are in the right set of mind.
