I got no place else to go!!!!!!
Richard Gere is such a cheesball. I cringe every time I see that scene. Gere is a B-actor at best.

That was a good scene, but not one of my favorites.
shareThere is absolutely nothing cringeworthy about that line. Anyone who knows anything about the military or any branch of it knows that a lot of the recruits come from broken homes. My friend was in much the same situation as Gere in the film. When he was singled out just like Gere during bootcamp in the Marines his instructor was playing the same type of a psychological game on him as he made him do the same type of exercises. Telling him he wants him to quit, bringing up his past because he read it in a personal file, and my friend broke down the same way as Gere. It's a moment they look for. It also means a lot for people in the military to pass bootcamp - this is why for many people in the service it's an accomplishment in many many ways.

I thought Gere deserved an Oscar nom for the way he delivered that line alone. He was good in the rest of the film as well.

I think the line was cheeseball, not the delivery. In retrospect, it's amazing he did as well as he did with that line.
"I got nowhere else to go"? That's a good reason for Foley to let him stay? How about something about a last chance to do something truly important with his life? About not turning out like a drunk and a ho-chaser like his daddy?
I think Gere, Gossett, and Keith did a fabulous job on this film. Everyone else could have been easily replaced by other actors to the same or better effect.
Is very bad to steal Jobu's rum. Is very bad.share

I think it was funny...Richard Gere, Mister Cool reduced to a whimpering gerbil boy.
shareHonestly, I was tearing up when he said that...knowing his father was a POS and his Mom was gone and the way he viewed women. He had no one. That line went straight to my heart.
