Name some other dark animated movies besides this.

For me:

The Black Cauldron.
Filmation's Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night. (It stars James Earl Jones and it's quite dark beyond belief that it has to be seen on youtube even for part 5 of the movie on there which is a disturbing scene)
The Secret of NIMH.
Watership Down.
The Brave Little Toaster.
Fire and Ice.
Wizards.

"You gotta be Fking kidding"-The Thing.

The Flight of the Dragons. <=== my contribution to the list.

All of the movies mentioned in this thread are great. Kudos for bringing up The Sea Prince and the Fire Child. My favorite animated movie for over 20 years now! About a year ago, i got a hold of the soundtrack for the film, and i'm still excited over it.

"The Point" was dark to me as a kid.

Unico in the Island of Magic

Atta way to mention it Strix_Varia! I hadn't seen either Unico film for years...just remembered something strange about how I felt when I watched them as a child in the 80s. Then I rewatched the first of the two...uh...SCARY! How that was even made for any child is totally beyond me. Clive Barker couldn't have written such a story if he tried. Also VERY depressing indeed.

When will you ever learn, this feeling is all you can discern?

Fantastic Planet - definitely more for the mature crowd. I didn't see it mentioned in the thread. It's right up there with Watership Down and Animal Farm as the more disturbing "cartoons" I saw as a kid, but damn if they weren't awesome. Watership down was just a little too much for me though, fuzzy little rabbits ripping each other apart like that...*shudders*

Heavy Metal is pretty dark and pretty awesome too.

Sleeping Beauty; speaking of which, even though many people consider Maleficent the greatest Disney villain...she rubs me the wrong way. LOL

the lion, the witch and the wardrobe (1979)...parts of it still creep me out/make me sad.

The forgotten movie The Mouse and His Child always somewhat disturbed and depressed me as a kid.

Thank you everyone. I love fairy tales and folk tales, but have always had a soft spot for the darker one. And now I know what to search for when I feel like seeing one I haven't seen before. Thanks.

This is Mike. He saves ghettos.

Thank you so much zozogogo for mentioning The Mouse and His Child. I haven't thought of that movie or the book in years. I loved both the film and the book and have just bought both.

Just off the top of my head:

-Watership Down (Quite bloody, a lot of rabbits are killed, and there's a rather chilling scene where a rabbit talks about an entire rabbit community being buried alive and gassed)
-Plauge Dogs (Involves the subject of animal testing, and includes a lot of blood and gore.)
-Felidae (The main character has a lot of disturbing dreams, dead cats are shown with their chests ripped open, some cats commit suicide, and there's even a cat sex scene.)
-The Mouse and His Child (Quite a few dark moments in this one, including one when a clockwork donkey is straight up murdered onscreen)
-Secret of NIMH (Also discusses experimentation on animals, some scenes can be frightening to small children, and one character gets crushed to death.)
