Come to think of it, a lot of 80's cartoons were pretty dark. Probably because unlike today they had messages and morals like fairy tales are supposed to have...Disney, while they make entertaining movies, has killed the fairy tale.

I don't think animation aimed towards a family audience can really get any darker than the Danish film Samson and Sally, which scared the crap out of me as a kid especially this segmant: (skip to about 4:30 of this segmant and watch it with part 6)
