Name some other dark animated movies besides this.

For me:

The Black Cauldron.
Filmation's Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night. (It stars James Earl Jones and it's quite dark beyond belief that it has to be seen on youtube even for part 5 of the movie on there which is a disturbing scene)
The Secret of NIMH.
Watership Down.
The Brave Little Toaster.
Fire and Ice.
Wizards.

"You gotta be Fking kidding"-The Thing.

I agree with a lot of the choices. More choices:

Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
The Cat Returns
Metropolis

Not for kids:

Paprika

bushtony and his mother suffer from Congential Stupidtiy and they didn't see it coming.

Crap! I forgot to mention a real classic:

Akira

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
Hunchback of Notre Dam (I know, Disney, but very dark for them)

The Sea Prince and The Fire Child was always pretty depressing.

The sea prince and the fire child! I was just going to type that and the old Hans Christen Anderson little mermaid from the early 80's with the real ending. Come to think of it, a lot of 80's cartoons were pretty dark. Probably because unlike today they had messages and morals like fairy tales are supposed to have...Disney, while they make entertaining movies, has killed the fairy tale.

Nothing animated is quite as depressing as Grave of the Fireflies! Beautiful...but depressing.

I don't think animation aimed towards a family audience can really get any darker than the Danish film Samson and Sally, which scared the crap out of me as a kid especially this segmant: (skip to about 4:30 of this segmant and watch it with part 6)
